We have the Diono radian car seat which has been great for traveling because the seat folds up, making wearing it on your back a piece of cake. I also bought the straps that attach to the Radian and allow you to wear it backpack style. So boarding a plane with a toddler and a carseat was relatively painless for me.

Instead of the Go Go Travelmate, I recommend the Britax travel cart which is essentially a luggage cart but allows you to use the LATCH clips to secure the car seat. It is all metal so has a much higher weight limit than the plastic Travelmate. It retails around $80 but I got it off amazon for $55.

Note: Most convertible car seats (like britax) are too wide to fit down the airplane aisle. The Radian is one of the narrower seats and it barely fits when I wheel it down the aisle.

We have figured out how to sort of balance the carseat upside down on top of the stroller. It's not ideal but it works.

@matador84: I read stories that the safety of a carseat could be compromised by the rough handling of baggage handlers, so I want to avoid that! Plus the added safety of the carseat in the plane is a bonus - AND it would ensure J doesn't try to squirm off the seat and run around ha!

I used an adjustable bungee cord to strap the car seat to my carryon suitcase because I knew my LO would not sit in it in the airport. {Looped through the points where the car's seat belt would go.} I carried a crossbody bag, rolled the carryon/car seat, and had both hands free to wrangle my LO.

Do you have to bring the seat on the plane? I would just check it if you can...I have a britax and got the cover for it. It has backpack straps so it was super easy to get from car to ticket counter to check it. I just out DS in the frame stroller.

I just did this a couple days ago. I lugged a Britax Marathon (heavy) in the Britax car seat bag backpack. it was not fun but it worked and it was nice to have the seat on the plane for a long (4 hr) flight. it does have wheels on the bag but I was also rolling a stroller and my wheeled bag (before checking/after claiming). I put a carry-on duffel into the car seat bag. the marathon itself barely fits in the bag (width), but plenty of room to add coats or a bag.

on the way home I'll have DH and I'm hoping one of us can roll it.

@kml636: I had the opposite experience! I had the J Cole travel bag, and TSA always unloaded it and ran the seat separately, and once they even marked the actual seat with a giant red marker! With the wheely cart, they just wiped it with one of those coffee filter looking things and sent me on my way. It totally depends on you get, I suppose.

@kml636: oh really? ugh that would suck. Do you think they'd allow rolling it alone and letting the toddler walk through? idk... the pictures on a couple I saw just looked like a strap that went through the back? But still that would be a big PIA while trying to contain a toddler... as if security is annoying enough to take off half your clothes/shoes, plus the toddler and all the luggage. I am actually surprised my husband is brave enough to go on this trip solo! J is a good kid, but everything else will likely be a hassle.

I consider getting one of the Roll things but after looking at all the reviews it appears that every car seat attaches to it differently and some people claim that TSA made them disassemble the whole thing through security! Not going to happen!

We always used the infant seat and snap and go before but now that she has outgrown the infant seat I ordered a second convertible seat (the combi corocco because it's lightweight- I needed a second seat anyways) and the J Cole travel bag to haul that sucker onto the plane or rather have my husband do it! I will just take a stroller with toddler up to the gate.

Before we got the Combi, we had to check the convertible car seat because it is just too heavy to haul through the airport.

I'll have to see if the local BRU has one. They are a little expensive (target has one online for $50) but it would obviously be worth it.

Okay, so I feel like a traveling PRO with DD! We've flown just the two of us a ton. Most recently I traveled with her and our giant, heavy Foonf, which I managed to lug solo and install rear facing! <pats self on the back one more time...>

The wheely thing you're talking about is the Go-go Babyz Travelmate. DD sometimes will ride in it, but otherwise I wear her on my back and wheel the seat behind me. The cart just goes in the overhead. I then bring the diaper bag and either wear it if DD is in the carseat or stash it in the seat if she's on my back. I'd get the wheels for sure! You can do it!

I've never done this solo (neither has DH), but we use a Combi Cocorro on flights and wheel it with a Snap n Go. We strap LO in, collapse the Snap n Go to check at the gate, and carry LO in his carseat to the seat. I guess the only way to do it solo would be not to have a wheel bag as your carry-on - you need both hands to carry the kid in the carseat.

we had our carry ons, the car seat + roller thingy, and an umbrella stroller. but it was both dh and i so it was fine. we took the car seat on the flight because we bought a seat for LO, and we gate checked the stroller. i know there is some sort of backpack thing that you can get for the car seat so that your DH can carry it on his back while LO is in the stroller and then DH has free hands to carry his bag.
