@hilsy85: we have them as i can get motion sickness, but there is no way she'd keep them on at this point. i will definitely try them in the future as they help me a ton!

@Chastenet: yeah, we kept it to plain foods, but she actually woke up from her nap on the plane and threw up. :( thanks for the advice though!

Oh no, what a horrible problem to have :( All I can say is that I had really bad carsickness as a kid, and it went away around Kindergarten age :/ Hopefully it doesn't stick around that long for your DD, but at least it won't last forever!

@SleepyMonkey: Sorry, this is a very late reply. As for clean up, I bought sandwich bags that I keep tucked in the seat pocket. Whenever we drive, there is someone in the back seat next to her, so that person had a brown paper bag at the ready in case she gets sick.
@birdofafeather: The only way car sickness has gotten better for us is cracking a window a bit, and planning so that she eats 1hr before we drive and so that we drive during nap time. I'm hoping she grows out of it soon!

bumping. we had 2 prior incidents with motion sickness, but nothing for months. then we flew to hawaii and she puked a lot about 4 hours into the 6 hour flight. car sick again when going down mountain roads, and sick on the flight home (we were prepared that time!).

and just today, she got sick in the car with DH and that was just a trip around town. I'll stock the cars with towels and wipes and change of clothes, but wondering if anyone else had success with their young toddler and motion sickness (she's almost 16 months)

@Chastenet: bumping! My 14 month old dd has recently become prone to car sickness. Poor thing. Any tips or tricks with how to make the cleanup easier? This time it went down where the straps hook into the seat. Ugh. I was in there with q tips! Gross. I was thinking cut a towel so I can lay it in the seat and have it fit around the straps.

@Chastenet: We live in a big city too, so I feel your pain about stop and go traffic. Its unavoidable a lot of the time, but when we can, we try to time longer trips with LO when its not rush hour (to avoid traffic).

And when we are in stop and go traffic, we try to accelerate and brake gently, (the sharp acceleration and braking causing a jerking motion which makes me sick, and appears to make LO sick too).

@Bluebonnet: Thanks! I can definitely work on #1, she is generally warm-blooded so may be getting too warm. Generally when we get in the car she has eaten recently but not immediately before the trip so there is something in her tummy. I'm not sure what I can do about #3 - we live in Chicago and sometimes you have no choice but to go through stop and go traffic to get out of the city.

I got carsick (and plane sick, and boat sick, etc) as a kid and I still get carsick as an adult. Poor LO also appears to have inherited my sensitive stomach.

Some things that work for us:
- making sure LO doesn't get too hot (make sure she's not over dressed and make sure there is lots of air circulating in the back seat.
- making sure she has food in her stomach, but she isn't stuffed.
- avoiding stop and go traffic when we can (this appears to be one of her biggest triggers)!

Even though LO occasionally gets sick we still keep her RF (as a toddler) because it is MUCH safer.

@Chastenet: I seem to remember that you have a French connection. See if you can get your hands on some Cocculine, most French pharmacies have it. It's a homeopathic tablet for motion sickness starting at 18 months. I myself have terrible motion sickness and it is really effective.

My LO had that issue when we switched him to the convertible car seat. After multiple trips resulting in a big mess, DH figured out that it might be caused by the way the seat was reclined. After some Google research, he added a towel underneath the car seat to make it more upright. That was the trick we needed, and LO didn't have any issues afterwards.

@Ocean girl: Thanks!
@rsp213: Hopefully if I crack a window that'll help with the overheating issue. DD does tend to be warm blooded, so maybe she's getting too warm.
@Mrs. Champagne: Yes, I am trying to hold off on turning her forward facing...But that might ultimately help.
@Penny Lane: I think I'll try the open window, and giving her water as you suggest. If that + ginger candy doesn't get us through the 4 trips we'll be making over the holidays then I think we'll just have to turn her forward facing.

my LO gets carsick pretty badly too. he's almost 16 months. opening the window for fresh air definitely helps. as well as keeping the car cool. we try not to feed him unless we have to, and when we do we try and wait 30-45 min after eating before driving again. I also make sure he drinks water, because I find that always helps me.

we ended up turning him forward facing a few months ago because he was throwing up so often. he definitely gets sick less often now. I'm the queen of carsickness (I regularly get sick while I'm driving -__-) so I wasn't surprised when LO started getting carsick too :(

@Chastenet: I'm pretty sure you can get them at pharmacies. They're little wristbands with a plastic dot that protrudes to push into the inside of your wrists (three fingers width below the palm).

@Fronkinzankinsbride: I get car sick, too, so I think she inherited it from me. As an adult, I can say I'm feeling sick and I can usually do breathing techniques or open a window to prevent actually throwing up. I wish DD could tell me, she doesn't even always fuss before it happens, the only warning is really the cough and by then it's too late. Anyway, will definitely try teh ginger!

I make DH sit with her now and I drive because otherwise I spend the whole ride staring at her looking for signs of sickness and holding a bag ready in case.

@brownie: Oh man, sounds like your son has it pretty bad, I feel your pain! The towel idea is very good, I may have to try that. I have some bath towels that I no longer use that could find a new home in our car. I will definitely try ginger, I was thinking maybe ginger suckers so she isn't actually ingesting more food to throw up? When we were recently visiting my ILs DD was forward facing in the car seat they bought for her and she still threw up, so I don't think that'll help for us either, unfortunately.

My DD went through this after she turned one. It went away at around 2 yo... I read up on it, and it's very common for young toddlers! This was almost 4 years ago now though, so from what I remember, we:

- cracked open the windows a bit for fresh air (even during the winter!)

- avoided dairy and full meals about an hour before driving (Light, bland snacks like crackers were ok to give)

And like you, I also learned to stock up on plenty of wipes, plastic bags and extra clothes.

I have always had this problem and I still get car sick even when I'm driving myself on my 15 minute drive home. I second the fresh air suggestion, even if it's freezing. We used to drive up in the snowy mountains and always needed to have a window cracked for my mom and I both.

It may actually help to be eating something. I chew mint gum every time I'm in the car but she's too young for that. Ginger cookies are a good idea. Acupressure wrist bands. I know rear facing is safer but I get really sick facing backwards (trains, bus) so when she's big enough for front facing that may help improve the situation too.

Sorry you guys are going through this. I hope she grows out of it soon. Most people do! :)

This thread is giving me hope. Two months ago, on the way to a wedding, my then 16 months old DD puked 7 times. I have no idea what to do to help. It has happened a couple of times in the past on long car rides though not with the same frequency. I will have to try ginger snaps next time.

I would love to not feed her before the long drive but then i worry that she would cry all the way up.

Ginger!!!! it helps a lot we do ginger snap cookies or just ginger pills. My son has had puking period where he will puke multiple times in one car ride. Just 2 weeks ago on his way to Speech (1 1/2 hours away) he vomited at the beginning of the ride and I didn't know until I went to get him out of the car. We also do the no food thing but that isn't always practical. Forward facing also didn't seem to help him (we had two carseats in the car and when he soaked his rear facing we let him forward face and he vomited two more times).

We actually stock towels in the car and put one over him like a blanket (sometimes under the straps so he can't yank it off). Then we can just remove the towel and put another one on when he vomits. We also sometimes put him in the carseat naked so we don't have to keep changing clothes.
