Hmmm, my sister's cat does this but she started soon after she was adopted. The sudden change does make me wonder if it's a UTI or she's not feeling well :-/ If you'd recently had a big change, like adopting another pet or something, I'd think behavioral. But just moving the litter box doesn't sound like enough to provoke that if she's been fine when you've moved to different places. Although maybe that was just the last straw, ha. I hope you get some good answers from the vet!

We're taking her to the vet today. We moved the litter box back upstairs and removed the litter (so we could get a urine sample). She peed on the carpet right in front of me yesterday evening, before we shut her in the room with her box. She peed a tiny little bit in the box since then, so I have a VERY small urine sample.

I'll definitely pick up some feliway while we're out and about today. Hoping it's just that she's mad at us and not sick. Mad I can handle; sick would make me so sad. Thanks for all the tips, guys!

@littlebug: I would move the litter box back first, if you can. We have two cats and when we had our LO, we moved our 2 boxes to be upstairs and downstairs. 1 cat figured it out, but the younger one, Leo, started to use it and then suddenly was peeing in all of our laundry. We finally figured out that he likes to stay with me all day and wouldn't leave to go find the litterbox. He did end up getting a UTI because he was holding it all day. Is there an out of the way corner you can put a small second box in maybe?

It could be the things others have mentioned, but since you just moved the box, that is probably the most likely culprit. They can get UTIs quick, so the cat may not be using the box as much now that it's in the basement. Good luck!

We just had this issue at our house! We have 6 cats so it is was hard to figure out the offender. We took them all in and determined 2 of them had UTIs. We got them medicine and changed their food in accordance with the vet and the problem stopped. Hope your kitty stops soon!

I'm going to follow this, our cat likes to pee behind the entertainment center and laundry basket. It started out if the blue after she was spayed. I started letting her outside and it helped a little.

Is it possible that the previous owners had a cat that marked?

@littlebug: Definitely take her to the vet! I second Mrs Bee's suggestions of using Feliway. That has helped us a LOT. There is also a product called Litter Magic that we have used with some success. Its like cat nip you sprinkle in the litter.

i should own stock in nature's miracle i've dealt with so much cat pee!

the first thing you need to rule out is if it's a urinary tract infection, so you should take her to the vet. if she is in pain, then it's common for them not to want to use the box.

other tips:

- try feliway
- keep the litterbox insanely clean
- sprinkle some catnip around the litterbox
- add a second litterbox
- try a new litter like cat attract
- don't leave anything ever on the ground that they can pee on like fabric, and keep all doors of rooms you don't want them to go in closed

it can be behavioral and maybe just some extra attention can help. it is often hard to diagnose.

good luck!

I know this is primarily a parenting forum, but many of us are also fur-parents, so I thought I'd post this here to see if anyone can help. We have a 3yo cat. We adopted her at 8 months old. She is spayed. She is about a month behind on her shots because we moved and just found a new vet (she has her first appointment on Thursday 11/6). ANYWAY. Just this week, she started peeing all over the house. We have never ever had a problem with this. Even when we first brought her home, she was perfectly litter-trained. We moved once, in with my parents, for 8 weeks, and no troubles. We moved again, into our new house, and no troubles. We have been in our new house for 2 months.

Last Tuesday, we moved her litter box down to the basement. She used it fine for a week. Then this Tuesday, I came home and felt a wet spot on the floor. I smelled it and it was clearly urine. And my son is still in diapers and did not have a leak, so it was definitely her. I cleaned it up, using the Bio-Kleen that I use on D's cloth diapers. The next day, more urine, and she had also pooped on the floor. I went down to check her litter box, and the door was only opened a crack, so it was maybe that she couldn't get in there. So I opened up the door, cleaned it out, and though that would be that. Nope. Yesterday I found that she had peed in our boot tray by the front door, and then caught her peeing in the corner of our dining room. No more random poops.

I don't know if this is behavioral - she's pissed off at us for some reason? Or if there is something wrong. She has seemed thin to me the past few days. I'm thinking I should probably call the vet? My husband thinks we should move her litter box back to where it was and see if she stops.

Thoughts...?
