There's also a product that plugs in like a glade scented thing that is made to soothe cats doing obnoxious things, but I can't remember what it's called!

@blackbird: Yeah, I can't really use a cleaner (that needs scrubbed, because of the nature of the rug. And, I need an enzyme cleaner for the cat pee, or he'll just keep going over and over. Ugh. I think I have to throw it out (the rug - not the cat).

@catlady: I think we're going to have to get rid of the rug. It's the first thing like this he's peed on, and we can't risk him doing it again, since it's in our daughter's play area. As far as stressed, I've been MEGA stressed about work lately. Just sooo busy. I've been working out a lot ... maybe he thinks my yelling and grunting is negative? Hahah. We don't ever threaten to get rid of him to his face. Ugh, I just wish I could talk to him!!

@mrbee: Thanks for that tip!

@Tanjowen: Thank you for the suggestion!

@littlejoy: Another vote for the Valium. Our indoor/outdoor cat got royally pissed when we broke out the baby gear (LO hadn't even arrived yet!) and started pissing on our cars. The vet put her on Valium and the issue resolved instantly and we kept her on the Valium until LO arrived and she accepted the fact. That and try bleaching out her litter box and drying in the sun to totally remove any smell.

We've been through this. It sucks. In terms of the rug, I'd probably get rid of it. Cats tend to mark the same place over and over again.

I think most of the previous posters have good advice regarding the cat. We've tried the Feliway and it didn't really work for us but I know it does work for some cats so it's worth a try. My friend's cat uses valium and it has worked wonders. We definitely need multiple litter boxes, plus one of my cats likes to pee in an empty litter box, so we have some boxes with litter and some without.

One other thing that we discovered after going through something similar a few years back was that one of my cats is apparently really sensitive to MY stress levels. She went through a time when she was peeing everywhere when I was really stressed out (which of course didn't help my stress levels). Now that life is calmer, she is fine. So not sure if that's relevant to you guys, but maybe the cat is picking up on something you or your DH is doing (perhaps the threat of re-homing).

Are your litter boxes plastic or metal? We had plastic ones and after a year they started to retain odor even when cleaned... and our cat started peeing outside of her box! We switched to new metal litter boxes and the problem was solved, to our vast relief!

@Littlebit7: My husband is ready to get rid of him, but we both agreed we'll try everything else first. He was our very first pet ... I can't imagine surrendering him to animal control, or putting him outside (both would likely mean death). And, as far as re-homing ... who wants an overweight, middle-aged cat who pees on things?! Even if he's very cuddly. ;)

@littlejoy: yep try the Valium. Getting rid of the cats just wasn't an option. It actually worked well because he became a much more mellow cat with the Valium and got along with the other cats so well! And it also resulted in a lot of amazing family jokes "ok dad go rub some Valium in your ears".
I think single cats can go nuts just as much as multiple cat households can. They just have their own brand of crazy :/

I hope it works out for you. My biggest fear when we had our LO was how our cats would react. They were fine and thank goodness. I couldn't imagine rehoming

Give us an update later on!!

@Littlebit7: Thanks for your advice ... I posted about this in one of my community groups, and I heard the same thing about the valium on the ears!! I'm going to talk to our vet.

He doesn't have a UTI or crystals. It's totally random. We got the black light, and the basement was a little scary. Random pee (and pee paw prints, ughhh). He peed on a pile of sewing scraps, and in a box of packing paper for my business. That's what initially had us check for crystals (the peeing on "soft" surfaces).

Thanks again!!

@littlejoy: I have multiple experiences with this with several cats in my family. Mainly my moms cats

One cat was a neutered tom. He started spraying when other cats were introduced to the household Eventually we had to start rubbing a Valium cream in his ears. It worked amazingly well. Like.... New cat. Calm gentle, happy. This persisted from about 8-13 years old when he passed. Zero peeing.

Second cat peed outside the box a lot. Eventually it was found that she had recurrent Uti's.

Boxes were always cleaned. Natures miracle worked great. Get a blacklight to see if they have peed anywhere else

But seriously. Valium.

I use Nature's Miracle. It removes the stain, the smell down to the enzymes that attract the cat to pee there again.

For something tough but homemade, soak area in vinegar and then throw some baking powder on it. Let it settle and the wash away.

In addition to the great ideas above, I recommend double sided tape. When we moved and our cat started peeing on the carpet, after using enzyme cleaner and everything, we put the tape all along the area he peed on. Next time he walked there, he got tape all over him, and he was too scared of that area to go back and pee. Cheap masking tape laid sticky side up also works. Be careful of a toddler getting stuck with the tape though!

Ours went through a phase of this. I googled stuff after washing pillows in our bath tub and huge couch cushions which stayed wet for weeks and I thought I would have to throw out. This is what I ended up buying because spraying vinegar did nothing. http://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-32-oz-Pet-Stain-and-Odor-Remover-ZUPETODR32/203207634

When I was searching for information online it said you need to buy an enzyme cleaner because it needs to interact with the bacteria/smell that has been left there in order to remove it. So you're supposed to spray this stuff, let it dry, and then vacuum it out of the item if you can. I didn't do the vacuum part, but our two couches no longer smell!

When our cat did it, it was totally out of the blue. He had had an urinary tract infection the year prior and we had put him on special urinary tract food just to ensure it might not happen again because male cats are more prone to them. He peed on so much stuff (couches, carpet, pillows, a sleeping bag) and we were so frustrated. We took him to the vet and paid for tests, but it was also behavioural. We bought one of these: http://www.petsmart.com/cat/stress-anxiety-relief/comfort-zone-feliway-cat-diffuser-kit-zid36-13534/cat-36-catid-200050 because my friend who is a vet tech suggested it. For us it did nothing, but for some it works.

Has anything in your house changed at all? We had moved his litter box to a different location and it was dark and we think that ended up being the problem because once we moved it back out into a better lit location it never happened again. We also had a second litter box that we put out in the open, hoping he would use it. We had also moved some furniture around and he may not have liked it. Cats are weird creatures.

Have you changed something in the house recently? Cats are really territorial, sensitive to change, and easily stressed. We're turning out office into a nursery and one of our cats has started peeing on any baby things left on the ground, it sucks. Try Nature's Miracle to get the pheromones out - once they've peed on something they think it's ok to pee on again. You can also buy a spray or a plugin called Feliway that's supposed to disperse happy cat pheromones and relax them - plug it into the room that was peed in.

When we were having this issue with our cats after a move our vet said to use unscented litter or the unscented non-litter types. Multiple boxes are key, one more than the number of cats (which you already do, so that's good). And clean the litter every day, even those you have extra boxes. Also, you may want to replace the boxes if they are plastic. Over time the smell seeps in. This is tough. We didn't have LO when we were having issues. I can't imagine.

@MtnBiker: Thanks for the tip. Man, you're working really hard!! I agree about the middle age cat thing. We aren't going to kick him out, or take him to a shelter. Re-homing would be an option, but it's a risk to whoever takes him (because we aren't sure if a new home will actually stop it). It's just getting to a point where it's affecting our life pretty extremely. He's never peed on our stuff (usually, just paper or a stray towel in the basement). He's the only cat, has two litter boxes, and is healthy. It's so frustrating.

Luckily she was a kitten and we were able to fix the issue by adding an extra litter box to our main level. I think there are some sprays to deter cats from areas...vinegar maybe? Maybe lock off some rooms? I'm sorry :/

I'd clean it by soaking it with the urine cleaner and following the instructions on the cleaner. We invested in a bissell spot bot.

Only cat? Or multiple cats?

For our cat, we crate him at night with a litterbox and water. our other cat spooked him in the box once years ago, and from then on he'll hold it until he can't and pee on a carpet. There was a time where we had to keep him crated 20 hours a day. Now on a good day we place him in the crate, he does his stuff, and then we let him right out. All that said, originally the crating was supposed to be a 6-8 week boot camp to retrain him to litter. I can't bring myself to rehome him because I haven't found anyone, and who is going to adopt a middle aged cat from a shelter with litter box issues?

Good luck.

Our cat peed on this rug in our den. I have no idea how to attempt to clean it. Any ideas? It's wool. The stain has dried.

Secondly, does anyone have experience with a cat peeing on carpets? He has no medical condition. He had a urinary tract issue about 6 years ago, but he's totally fine now. It's behavioral. DH is ready to re-home him.

Also, only constructive feedback, please. No bashing the idea of re-homing. We have a toddler, and need to consider safety/hygiene.
