It wasn't even part of or thought process while choosing names, but we ended up with Thomas as his middle name (after my dad$ so it worked out perfectly!

We also didn't pick saint names. One was a name we liked, and the other is a family name. Maybe he will be the first saint with that name. :-)

The saints name thing isn't really a rule, more of a tradition. If you wanted, you could also just choose a patron saint for the baby. Not everyone has one, but we grew up celebrating our saint day like a mini birthday-special dinner and dessert. It was fun :)

I'm Catholic and I have no idea if the names we've chosen are saint names or not. We went to our baptism class a few weeks ago and our priest just had us share the names we've chosen and why we chose them...he didn't mention anything about having to choose saint names.

We did a middle name as a saint name. You could also wait to see what day your LO is born on and see whose saint day that is and name after that saint.

I love names, and it was important to us for our kids to have names with style. That said, we were equally mindful of giving them strong patrons. We thumbed through the Lives of the Saints for ideas, looking around when DD was due and also just seeing if anything jumped out. Both her first and middle are saint's names. She has a little doll of each, and we ask them to pray for her in her bedtime prayers (when we do a little mini litany of her patrons). She's getting old enough to recognize her name, and grins when she hears it in the Eucharistic Prayer on Sundays which is pretty fun.

All of that said, I don't think you HAVE to do anything! I love the name Avery Thomas, and you could still play up any of the St. Thomas' as his patron in the same or different ways we do! And maybe he'll be the first!

Kind of off-topic, but I'd totally consider Emil as a middle name because of this priest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_Kapaun (He hasn't been beatified yet, but he's on the road there.)

I like names that have good stories behind them, which is probably the reason I gravitate to saint's names.

LO's first and middle names are both saint's names. We will probably do that with future children too, because there were a lot of saint's names we liked that we didn't use!

As parents we're charged with raising them to be saints, so I think it's okay to break new ground name-wise. (Someone had to be the first St. Therese, St. Kateri, St. Ignatius, St. Damien, etc.!) Your LO could be the first Saint Avery to be canonized! ;)

My mom comes from a catholic family & all 8 kids have a saint name, either as their first or middle. It's not too hard though, considering most saint names are pretty 'classic' names to begin with (Thomas, Anne, Marie, etc)

Huh, DH is Catholic and this hasn't come up at all in our naming discussions! Though now that you mention it he and his sister do both have saint's names... For middle names we are going to use family names, and one of our boy picks happens to be a saint's name, but otherwise our baby will have to wait until confirmation to get a saint's name.

Our chuch doesn't have the saint name rule, so I would ask yours. But, I think you should be fine with the name you're wanting to use, especially because I think using the saint name as a middle name totally counts!

Growing up, I thought Catholics HAD to name their children after saints. My SIL has a favorite name if they have a girl that is very trendy and my mom always says, "I have never heard of St. (name)."
Both of J's names are saints, but that is just a coincidence. My niece's name is not a saint and I have a bunch of cousins that definitely do not have a saint's name. I think its a nice thought, but not a "rule".

No, our LO's first name does not have to be of a Saint, but it does turn out that our choice for a girls middle name is that of a Saint and our choice for a boys first name is also that of a Saint. I guess it just happened that way...

@LovelyPlum: Same exact thing-- and my siblings and I are the same way-- most of us there is no St. Firstname but we all have a St. Middlename.

We are planning on one of the names being a saint's name, so each child can have a patron saint. So, you could use Avery Thomas, and St. Thomas could be the patron saint. Lots of saint names make great middle names!

DH was born Catholic & I converted a year & a half ago. DH is very adamant about naming our child after a saint. Some of the names we like aren't saints. If we have a boy DH wants to name him after himself as he was named after his father. I totally snagged the name Avery from another bee and thought Avery Thomas would be nice. There is no Saint Avery. If we did this DH & baby boy would have the same initials & middle name. Adorable right!?

How did you decide to name your kids. Did the first name HAVE to be a saint?
