We got the baby gate with a cat door in it, took the door off, and then used heavy duty tape to narrow the opening so that LO can't fit through it. I'm not sure I'd do that if you are dealing with stairs, though!

Thanks for sharing @mamabolt. DH and I were having a heated discussion about how to allow the cats to their litter in the unfinished basement while keeping baby from the stairs. I wanted to put a car door in the door but DH thought it would hurt the value of our home. I sent this link to him and am adding it to my registry ASAP. Thanks bees!

@PurplePeony: yeah, the Carlson one I have has a bar at the bottom that I would not feel comfortable having at the top of the stairs. I would find one with less of a trip hazard.

@MaryM: @bluestriped bee: there's definitely a difference between baby gates meant for stairs and those meant for just blocking off a doorway. I'm assuming pet gates are more akin to the doorway baby gates. I would only use a baby gate specifically described as stairway-safe at the top of a flight of stairs (I'd be less concerned about the bottom) and I wouldn't use a pet gate there. Also, the gate we got specifically says not to rely on the tension option only if you're using it on stairs, but to make sure it's also screwed in. That's why we ended up creating space at the side of the gate instead of getting one with a pet door -- I couldn't find one of those rated as stairway-safe. And raising it up seemed to create a tripping hazard because of the horizontal bar at the bottom, so this seemed like the safest option.

@BeachMama: I did this with my gate. My FIL sawed the bar off with a tool he has, and it is just wide enough for the cat to walk through, but the baby can't.

@MaryM: Good question. I know DH and I (and our big dog) can move it if we trip or bump real hard into it. But I've seen baby gates that are much more flimsy. I know the Carlson gates have the ability to screw directly into the wall. We don't use that option. We use the tension option.
I'm curious to hear what others have to say.

Like this baby gate by Evenflo. I bought this for a party and wanted to keep small dogs out of certain rooms. I wanted something cheap. It didn't seem very strong at all. http://m.target.com/p/evenflo-position-lock-tall-wood-gate/-/A-13979830?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=google_pla_df&LNM=13979830&CPNG=Baby&kpid=13979830&LID=9pgs&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=13979830&kpid=13979830&gclid=CLv9y4KzkMcCFc1ffgodr8IJ3Q

thanks everyone! DH was saying he will likely raise the gate so they can crawl under. Just annoying as we didn't think of this before he installed it.

Is there a difference between pet gates and child gates (safety wise)? Because I saw this one on groupon last week (like MamaBolt's but not wide)

We did the baby gate with a pet door. It worked out great to keep our little one out of the bathroom with the litter box in it. The only thing is that I couldn't find a gate that had both a pet door and people door (that is, that it actually opened). So we just hopped over it.

We did the same as @BeachMama. There's just enough space between the wall and the next bar over for the cat to squeeze through. If our doorway was a little narrower, we could have offset the gate so there was more of a gap between one wall and the first bar of the gate than on the other side, but it was just wide enough that we needed an extender so removing one bar from the extender was our only option.

We use a baby gate to keep our dogs out of the room where we keep the cat's food and litter box. Both cats are able to jump over it just fine, but we also leave about a 6 inch gap at the bottom so they can crawl under as well.

We just moved into our first house. We installed a baby gate at the top of the stairs and intend to put one at the bottom of the stairs. However we have already had the issue of our cats meowing and meowing at nighttime when they are stuck downstairs and want to come sleep in our room ( which they have been doing since we got them almost 10 years ago). But if we bring them upstairs, then they cannot get to their food, water or litter if they need to, which is downstairs. Has anyone run into this problem before and how did you deal with it?

I think it actually is just one of our cats r hat cannot jump over the gate, the other one can. But the one that can't is the big meow-er and in need of attention and likes to sleep on our bed the most.
