@MrsRcCar: sending you hugs. Hang in there mama...glad you are getting your LO evaluated. He will catch up! My LO is 22 months and has been in speech therapy for about two months now and she has definitely made strides! He will get there....baby steps!

And it's true, there is such a wide range.....we have friends who have younger LO's who hit certain milestones crazy early but then other milestones dragged for them. You just never know.

You're a great mom!

@MrsRcCar: yeah he sounded underwater too. It was a 50/50 concern of hearing and apraxia. We have been treating both (tubes and therapy) and just in the last 3 months has made vast improvements.

@autumnlove: :( Sorry about your mother in law. I feel like I have closed a lot of family out of things with my boys because I just don't want to hear the comments. My folks were in denial at first but they have come around. The rest of the family not so much but it is nice to have my mum to help me shut them down.

@brownie: I am wondering if tubes wouldn't help him. When he does talk it sounds very much like he is talking thru water.
@MrsMccarthy: I am hoping that EI really helps him. EI services come right to our house assuming that weather doesn't suck. I am wondering if I should have done the therapies at a different location so we don't miss them.
@LML: N gets words mixed up a lot. We think there is some kind of blockage in his ear. We are hoping to get more answers from the audiologist next month.

Hugs, LO 2 has gross motor issues and I had/still have issues with it. I know I shouldn't care and all kids are on their own schedule, etc but I still struggle!

@lemondrop: I am super, super, super sensitive when my family makes comments. My MIL said something totally crazy the other day! :(

@MrsRcCar: My DD failed her newborn screen, so we knew from her first few weeks of life that she had moderate hearing loss. It was also fairly obvious with her. When she was 3 days old, there was a thunderstorm and, during an incredibly loud crack of thunder, she didn't respond at all. At that moment, I knew for sure something wasn't right. She was fitted with a hearing aid at five months. I think she hears pretty well with her hearing aid because she has pretty good receptive language. Although she often mixes up words that rhyme or sound similar. Like if I say "seat," she'll point to her feet because she thinks I said "feet."

She just turned 30 months, and was in EI until December. We live in a state where the cost-share for EI just went through the roof, so we could no longer afford EI services. She goes to a special needs preschool where she gets speech therapy several times a week in the school setting. I'm looking to start supplementing her school therapy with more speech, but I'm trying not to overschedule her.

Oh honey I feel your pain. Dealing with an sort of delay in your child is so hard. That's why I started that Facebook group. It can be a very isolating feeling. Just keep doing what you are to catch him up. Trust me it works. I have seen axing strides in my son and he has more words than I can count now after 10 months with EI. He is still a tiny bit delayed in certain areas of speech but no where near as much as he was. You are not alone.

My little guy was failure to thrive and he had a speech delay. I am definitely sensitive about it still even though he is making HUGE improvements in both areas. We did tubes for speech (he never had a bad hearing test). He started with a private therapist and seriously, he now talks our ears off. Saying the funniest things and whining about everything. But I am applying to private school for him and it is still on the forefront of my mind even though it isn't really an issue anymore.

I could have written this post. My daughter has hearing loss and a significant speech delay and I actually dread being around other kids close to her in age because I don't want to get depressed. This morning I heard a boy in her class at school say, "I'm trying to put my lunch away." All I could think about was the fact that there was not one word in that sentence that my DD could say. Not to mention the fact that she can't put together sentences in the first place. But I just remind myself that it is not a race. She will get there, and your little one will too.

@Mrs. Deer: I am hoping to make huge strides in speech therapy which is what he is in EI for. He does like his therapist and we work very hard with him on words. Although we try to keep it fun.

@MrsRcCar: I so know this feeling! We've caught up quite a bit but it's still noticeable how many fewer words she has (and her pronunciation). I always tell myself that everyone talks eventually! We've been in speech therapy now for 8 months.

@lemondrop: my family is completely in denial about him being behind which doesn't help when I see N with other kids. I guess for a little while until we are with other kids. My nephew is talking more then N. My nephew is 18 months old. We think that part of N's problem is hearing and he is going to see the audiologist the first week of feb. Both of my boys don't go to daycare.

I'll join the party

This has been a big issue among our family since Thanksgiving. I felt very blindsided and defensive that members of our family feel that our oldest is behind. He's our first, we don't do daycare, and until recently hasn't had another kid to regularly interact with. He's been what I feel is unfairly compared to older kids and his cousins who have a year on him, have been in EI, and have always had a sibling to talk to.

I feel better after our pediatrician appointment today, but I basically burst into tears in front of her when describing the situation. She reminded me that there is a very wide range of normal when it comes to language skills and some kids develop physical abilities sooner and others do language.

She didn't feel that therapy was needed, but suggested going forward with an eval to pacify family. He is too old for EI, but we'll do an eval through our school district. He is legit behind plenty of other kids his age speech-wise, but he's making good strides so I was happy with his development. I keep reminding myself that the concern is completely out of love for our kiddo, but it hurts that what I thought was good for our family has put him behind other kids.

If you want to commiserate more, you can always e-mail/text/call me- pm me and I'll give you my info. I don't want to go too into details here on a public forum, but I'm partying right along with you

We're in the process of starting EI because T (10 months) has a gross motor delay. I can relate about being sensitive. A friend just posted how her 8 month old has perfected crawling and pulling up and another friend posted a video of her son (11 months) taking his first steps. T is no where near doing those things. It hurts sometimes. Major hugs mama.

However it really stung listening to other kids younger and older then him just chatting away and N barely used words. N is already in EI, but I was caught totally off gaurd how sensitive I was about it. I felt so sad by the end, even though N had a great time.
