I can't speak to starting later, or how many you will need for an older baby...

Just wanted to say I love my BG 4.0s. I have 12 BG 4.0s and 12 Charlie banana pockets (both very similar). And 1 BG Freetime. The BG 4.0s are my favorites! My LO goes to daycare 3 days a week-she is in sposies those days and in cloth the rest of the time.

I have 24 CDs, a mix of 4.0s and Freetimes. I like both but for different reasons, so I'm glad I have them to choose from (sometimes it's nice to stuff the 4.0s with hemp inserts). DH has a habit of putting sposies on her, but it's definitely cut down on the frequency of purchasing dipes.

I do laundry every other day. I hang everything to dry, so it takes longer to cycle through a laundry batch.

Don't forget that Cottonbabies is running a sale right now :). Buy 4 get 2 free:

It's not too late! My LO is almost eight months and we just started cloth diapering. We have seven 4.0s, one freetime, and four alvas. Everything is great except we haven't quite figured out how to store the dirty diapers, but it's great other than that which I'm sure we'll figure out!

i don't think it's too late! we have several types of the cotton babies brands, but i personally LOVE our 4.0s. yes, you have to stuff them, but it's easy to do, dry easily and you can stuff if you need more absorbency.

i agree that you should try a rental if you can. i thought we would love the AIO elementals, but they are not our favorite.

I don't think you're too late! I love our CDs. We have BG pockets, Grovia hybrids, and Thirsties fitteds and covers. I'd try a couple of different kinds (because you can always re-sell) and see what works for you!

@autumnlove: I tried the Elementals yesterday and hated it! Someone help me understand - the absorbant part got all bunched up in the middle and just the waterproof part held in all the poo. Why isn't it attached?

@coacheswife123: I'd actually start with ONE diaper! I was planning to CD using the freetimes but got one as part of a rent-to-own and hated it - it's SO bulky and LO can't close her legs around the super bulky crotch. We're doing another rent-to-own now and I'm making sure she pees and poops in every single diaper before we buy anything! If you use one, you can use it, wash it, rotate until you get a sense for how well it'll work.

AIO diapers are definitely easy, practically as easy as a disposable. No stuffing, no folding, just on and go! This is even more so the case if you get velcro versions, but I personally prefer snaps as they last longer. The only AIOs I have are BG Freetimes and I like them for the most part. I like that they don't take too long to dry because of the flaps, but I'm not a huge fan of microfiber. I really prefer natural fibers for my LO, as they seem to cause less rashes on her. My go-to style right now is to stick a prefold in a cover, snap, and go.

As far as how many to get, it depends on how often you want to do laundry. If you think your LO goes through 6-8 diapers a day, I'd get 16 so you can wash every other day but have a few extras in case you forget to put the diapers in the dryer or something (I do this a lot....). Course, you could just get a few and use them once in a while during the day until you decide you like it and just purchase more over time. It can be expensive to get your stash started if you buy them all at once.

@coacheswife123: I was in the same boat, except I bought cloth before LO was born, then realized that using our apt's communal washing machines so frequently would be major work and opted out. Well, we moved to a house when LO was 6 months and still I was dragging my heels. Finally, when she was 9 months old my husband was like, "Should we maybe try the cloth diapers that we already purchased?" Ha! So I got guilted into in, which ended up being a very good thing.

From my perspective, you are absolutely right that it's easier when they are older and getting fewer diaper changes. For a couple of months we had 12 diapers and that worked just fine for us (LO wore disposables at night). Then when disposables weren't working at night anymore and we put her on cloth full time, I ordered another 6, so we currently have 18. I wash every other day. The only other thing we did was buy some nap time/overnight inserts.

I'm glad you are considering cloth and wish you the best of luck! It's weird how much enjoyment I get out of them now. Oh - and we use Bum Genius 4.0's with the snaps since supposedly they don't wear out as quickly as the velcro.

It is never too late to start! I'd probably start with 12 diapers and see if that works for you. The nice thing about brands like BG is they re-sell well so even if you don't end up liking them, you can get a good portion of your investment back.

I started CDing when LO was two weeks old, so no advice there. I'm of the mind that it's never too late to start, though, particularly if you're thinking of using them for future LOs.

I have both the Freetimes and a half dozen Elementals (I prefer the former--they dry faster), and we love them. We have 24 total, and at this point (LO is 14 months old) I wash them every 2-3 days or so, so it really depends on how often you're wanting to do laundry.

Ok. I have a few questions. LO is almost 9 months old now and has only used disposables. I was totally uninformed about CD when we had him and it just seemed like one other thing to add to my plate while sposies are so easy.

Fast forward 9 months and I am wishing we had given them a shot. I NEVER thought I would be interested in cloth dipes but the more I research the more intrigued I am. Especially by the BG freetimes and the fact that you can buy flushable liners for them if needed.

I'm kind of thinking about getting some and CD him at home (we would just still do disposables at the babysitter - which is only 3 days a week) just to get a feel for things. that way, I can make an informed decision about CD for our next LO.

I know that if I started now I could use them for the next if we decide to go that route. I also think *maybe* it would be an easier adjustment since 1. he has solid poops and only poops once or twice a day and 2. requires a diaper change much less frequently.

Did anyone else start CD late in the game or should I not rock the boat and keep things the same.

I'm most interested in the ease of the AIO dipes - especially the BG Freetimes but would love to hear what you think would be best to try - if we decide to.

Last - if I decide to give it a go, how many do you think we would need? 6? 12? I'm guessing 12 since he goes through 6-8 dipes a day now.
