@oskarsmommy: like some of the other ladies here, I had some bad numbers. My FSH at 13 and my AMH was atrocious at 0.3. I was doing a bunch of testing for recurrent losses. Our plan of attack was to start Femera in March but I found out I was pregnant in February. Good luck to you, I hope Clomid is all you need!

@winniebee: I took folic acid with my son, and he is totally fine, and I knew none of this. he did, however, have a tongue tie, and he has a small umbilical hernia (looks like an outtie belly button) Both are "midline defects" so who knows if it did in fact have to do with my impaired ability to absorb folic acid.

I DON'T think the mthfr thing could cause spina bifida, especially since you have two healthy children.. If that were so we would see a much more clear link between the two.

Again, sometimes I think we know TOO much now a days..

@oskarsmommy: Chiming in with an AMH success story (at least so far). I'm 28, and at the age of 27 I had bloodwork come back with a AMH of 0.99. Everything else was within the normal range. A few months later I had a chemical pregnancy (after an HSG cycle). Eventually, I got pregnant on the second round of Clomid at 50mg and I'm 29 weeks tomorrow. Granted, my age may play a factor in my favor. My OB basically dismissed my AMH numbers as being completely irrelevant for someone my age because my FSH number was normal.

@oskarsmommy: I've read that, but geneticist basically said because I have 2 healthy kids....having inability to absorb folate seems pretty unlikely. But I just don't know. I'll follow up with her / MFM though. I haven't tested for MTHFR before.

@winniebee: I'm sure you already know this - I also am hetero a&c for mthfr - but you want to take folate, and actually avoid folic acid. Sorry if this is something you already know - but I had a string of appointments that landed me with a hematologist, and this, plus baby aspirin, was her guideline for me.

And I agree, knowing everything that can go wrong isn't helpful, but where do you draw the line when looking for answers. :bummed:

@Shantuck: I agree, the "shitty luck" theory isn't exactly reassuring. I mean, it totally could have been caused by a folate deficiency or some environmental factor that we just don't know about, but that all seems unlikely since I didn't do anything differently with this pregnancy than my others. They didn't recommend further genetic testing on me, since it was caused by a neural tube defect. There's one school of thought that MTHFR mutation could be a cause of losses but the recommendation for me would be to take 4mg of folic acid prior to TTC, if we ever choose to again. I guess that's the same recommendation for MTHFR. Since I've had one child with open neural tube defect, I'm at slightly greater risk of it happening again - 3% chance. But by taking the high dose of folic acid, my risk is reduced back down to 1%. I've done a lot of googling and lurking on online boards to find someone who has had two children with neural tube defects. It seems that those whose children have had spina bifida versus other open neural tube defects (ancephaly, for example) haven't gone on to have other issues. My OB set up an appointment with MFM/geneticst for us to recap. I guess I'm not concerned about an open neural tube defect, but another loss because of one a trisomy, triploidy, turners, etc. Spending so much time on the internet, I now know of everything that can go wrong.

@winniebee: Bad luck as an explanation never makes you feel good. When I had testing after my D&C, I found out the cause for my loss was some bizarre thing that my OB said she had never seen in decades of practice. I left that office feeling like a scientific freak show rather than feeling reassured that X happened and doing Y will fix it next time. Did your geneticist and/or OB recommend doing any further testing just to confirm there isn't a gene mutation or something else going on?

@oskarsmommy: thanks, i appreciate it. It's been really rough. Some days it seems a little better, but overall, I've been just....sad. I'm here only sporadically, looking at a lot of the site is just so overwhelming. I hope you get some answers soon and that healthy baby comes along too.

@Shantuck: Thanks for responding. My OB explained it the same way to me. My FSH was low, like 5 or something. Although of course our most recent loss was not caused by a "bad egg"...geneticist and OB and MFM have all told us that it was just horrible, awful luck. It makes me feel like if we ever rolled the dice again, it would just lead to more heartbreak for us.

@winniebee: Been thinking lots about you and hoping you are able to get some answers. My low AMH was accompanied by slightly elevated FSH. It was 12.72 on cycle day 3 and it should have been 10 or under if things were operating normally. My RE explained it really well... you're basically born with all your eggs you will ever have while guys are constantly generating new sperm. It isn't surprising that the eggs of a 23 year old are going to be better quality than a 36 year old. There will still be good ones in there but lots more duds than when you were younger. That helped me come to grips with my losses... knowing that there was likely a good egg in there and that it was mostly a perseverance game.

@Shantuck: My AMH was .66 at age 35. I never ended up going to an RE because I happened to get pregnant before the appointment, but that pregnancy resulted in the loss of our sweet boy at 18 weeks. My OB said the low AMH alone didn't really concern her, but now I'm wondering if my repeat losses (including our TFMR) has something to do with it. Did you have high FSH too, or just low AMH?

@oskarsmommy: My amh was 0.79, which was abnormally low for age 35. My doc told me that with my low amh, it was just going to take longer than normal to catch a good egg. I had two miscarriages over the span of a year and am now 20 weeks. Your numbers are nowhere as low as mine (my first doc said I had a 1% chance of conceiving naturally; second doc told me to keep at it and try clomid to ovulate more than one egg in hopes of catching a good one). I ended up pregnant naturally. Good luck. It's so disheartening!

@Shantuck: thanks! Nope, actually spoke with dr and everything is 'normal'. I always question the reference ranges after going through my thyroid testing - since then I have been suspect, since those ranges are so far off from optimal.

If it's in ng/mL, then that seems on track for your age.

Like @shantuck said, you'll want to look for reference ranges. It seems to me different doctors are happy with different numbers, and even different labs have different "cut-offs" for what they consider normal. If I remember correctly, my RE said he wanted to see mine under 60. But I've seen on the internet where that number goes as high as 75-80.

Your blood work values should have come with reference ranges as what levels are normal really vary from lab to lab. Does your number fall outside of your lab's reference range?

Any of you ladies have CD 3 tests done? I just had mine, and got the results online, but have yet to speak to my OB.

Here is what I know so far:
ESTRADIOL 54.1
FSH 6.0
PROGESTERONE 0.9
Is my E2 a little high? I keep seeing that under 50 is ideal.. Any input appreciated!
