@c.sassy: Awesome! Thank you so much! I really liked the look of the Elementals, being that they really are all one piece. It seems much easier for a newb like me :) I'm going to have to check our local stores for the Bac Out...I'm hoping Whole Foods might have some!

@ValentineMommy: It's a cloth safe stain and odor remover. We love it! I also use it in the prewash sometimes. And I know you didn't ask me about the Elementals, but I really like mine. I really like that the inside is 100% cotton. With the exception of a few BG 4.0s for out and about, we have an all cotton stash. I just feel like it's healthier for her little booty for some reason. Now that we're into solids, though, I see that there are a lot of little crevices for poop to hide in. It hasn't been much of a problem yet, but we may try disposable liners. I think for that reason alone the Freetimes may have a slight advantage. I really hate it when she majorly poops in the 4.0s. Getting the insert out is not fun.

ETA: I got my Bac Out from Amazon, but I've also seen it in my local grocery store but not in the spray bottle (in the organic section).

@mrstilly: Thanks! I did end up going with DH to buybuybaby last night, which has a few cloth diapers in store so he could see them. He just shook his head and said "whatever you want to do". So....I win! :)

@c.sassy: What's Bac-Out? Where do you find it? Thanks for the sites!! I did actually come across that greenmountain one yesterday and watched a TON of videos and read up on a lot. It is a GREAT site! I will check out the other one today!

@sotomorrow: I was looking at the BG elementals, and thinking that would be a good place for us to start. Do you like that one over the 4.0 and freetime?

Only time we have had BG AIOs leak is when we try and use the Elementals (organic) overnight, now that she's sleeping through the night. I think she's a heavy wetter though.

@ValentineMommy: We didn't need to do anything with poopy diaper before starting solids. Spray with Bac-Out and straight in the pail. Now we just dunk them in the toilet. The poop comes off pretty easily. CDing can be really confusing. I found the best information at http://greenmountaindiapers.com/

@ValentineMommy: I would just order a diaper so that you can show your DH and mom how easy they are. Use a doll or a teddy bear to put the diaper on. If you are using pockets or AIOs, they really do go on just like a disposable.

Also, let your DH know how much money cloth can save. DH and I have used cloth since DS was a few weeks old and he's now 19 months old. We had one break for about a month-6 weeks when DS had been on antibiotics and his diapers were so liquidy and gross that I switched to sposies until things got back to normal. We also use goodnight sposies at night time because DS is a very heavy wetter. We broke even around 9 or 10 months old (the amount we spent on cloth equaled the amount we saved by not buying sposies all those months). At this point we have saved over $1000.

@ValentineMommy: I don't have issues with my BGs leaking. The only diapers I have had lots of problems with were FuzziBunz. I could not get them to stop leaking. Look for diapers used. Diaperswappers is a good place to start. Also, there are tons of facebook buy/sell/trade groups. There are general ones and ones for pretty much every individual brand.

I also like my Charlie Banana pockets.

@Mrsbells: I figured as much. I can't figure out what you would do WITHOUT the sprayer?

@zippylef: I just started looking into the AIO's and Bumgenius seems to be highly recommended. Do they ever leak? I'm going to look into that other company too! I just don't know how I'm going to talk DH into this!

@ValentineMommy: I like my AIOs because of the brand I have. Peachy Green http://www.peachygreendiapers.com/ . They are AWESOME. I like them because they are super trim, made of natural materials (organic cotton and bamboo) and I find the brand more ethical since they are hand-sewn in Missouri, instead of in a factory in China. Yes, that makes them more expensive but the quality is incredible.

My main beef with pockets is that they are bulky. We have mostly BumGenius 4.0s. I think that if they were sized, I would like them better. The sizing snaps in the front are just a little bit bulky for my taste. They work fine, I still love them, but I find myself reaching for my Peachy Greens first.

Nope! Like some people mentioned, EBF and FF poo can all go in the washer until you start solids.

We have pockets, fitteds, and AIOs. I have a diaper addiction. They all get washed together.

I think it helps to look at some kinds of diapers in person, if you can. Do you have a cloth diaper store near you? I found ours by googling the nearest bigger city and cloth diaper.

Otherwise, the pictures on the BumGenius/Cotton Babies site really helped me out. For example, BG makes Freetimes and Elementals, which are both all-in-ones and BG 4.0s are pocket diapers that you stuff.

We also use (pre-owned) goodmama organic fitted diapers, which are really expensive so don't google them and fall in love. They require a cover to be waterproof. We use fleece pants or fleece-lined jeans as a cover when needed. Sometimes we just have her in the diaper and change her frequently so her parts can breathe.

@zippylef: Thanks! I think I read somewhere that you prefer the AIO's? Is there a particular reason?

I really want to try CDing, but my family thinks I'm insane. I just can't get past how CUTE they are. hahaha

@MrsCB: and @MrsHotDog: Thank you!!! How do you get the poop into the toilet? Do you HAVE to buy one of those sprayer things?

And what the heck are the liners for? Those really thin things? Where do they go and what do they do?!?

Why is this so confusing? Lol

My LO is FF and we CD. It doesn't really make a difference until they go on solids and things firm up. Just add in an extra cold rinse before you do your wash routine and it works out pretty well. :)

We have pockets and AIOs/AI2s. I wash them exactly the same.

All the diapers and all the poop (except EBF poop which doesn't pertain here) essentially are cleaned the same. No matter what type of diaper you have, you will need to knock as much poop off into the toilet that you can. I have read that some people think some diapers (flats, prefolds) are easier to clean than others (AIO's, pockets) but I have some of every kind as I have never had an issue.

Please let me know if I can help you anymore. It is sooo intimidating when you start looking at cloth diapers because of all the types, the brands and the acronyms!

Nope, being formula fed doesn't make a difference! You wash them the same way you would with breast fed poo. It only changes when you add solids.

Each diaper will have instructions for particulars on washing/drying, but generally all need a CD safe detergent. As for types there's a few basic types:

AIO - closest to disposables, all in one piece.
Pocket - a waterproof cover with a soft lining, but no absorbency, needs to be stuffed with an insert to be absorbent.
Covers & Inserts - waterproof cover with no lining and some type of insert. You can use prefolds, flats, or brand-specific inserts. No stuffing necessary.

My LO isn't here until Feb, but I'm just starting to look into CDing. At first I was looking into the grovia hybrids, and now I'm wondering about all in one's.

Our baby will be formula fed exclusively. Does this make a difference as far as CDing or how to clean the diapers?

I have no idea what I'm doing. Can someone give me the rundown on the different types of diapers, as well as what it would take to clean them? Does the formula-fed make a difference as far as cleaning?
