Updating in case anyone finds this useful now or in future. The ped said he was prescribing 2.5ml twice a day, 5ml per day could be given in one dose instead, but often causes more digestive upset. Anyway, we have been doing one dose with breakfast and serving no dairy. DS is just drinking water at this meal. He’s still on two naps so when he wakes from his 1st nap he has some milk, and maybe some cheese or yogurt with lunch. Then he gets his 2nd dose after his afternoon nap, which gives us enough window to have some dairy with dinner or milk before bed. This makes the window between the two doses more like 6 hours or so but I feel like he’s still getting a decent amount of dairy which is a bit of a staple at only 12 mos.

@lamariniere: that is really interesting. My daughter is all but immune to amoxicillin so Cefdinir is the first level of antibiotics we start with and I've never once heard that we need to avoid dairy. Thankfully we do antibiotics in the evening and usually other than some parmesan on top of pasta she's not really eating dairy at that time anyway, but yeah, that's concerning that this is a real warning and it's not commonly mentioned.

Yes! And it's a pain! We had a milk/bottle loving baby as well. It worked out but man, there were choice words said 😂😂

Interesting. My 9mo is breastfed and eats solids but hasn't had any dairy yet (cheese, yogurt) so I guess it's ok for him?

@jhd: honestly, I only know because I’m doing a master in a related field and we’ve covered antibiotic resistance. It does make me wonder though how many parents aren’t aware of the interaction and if that could be a reason for so many repeat infections in young children.

@lamariniere: thanks. He’s not absolutely crazy about milk so I think we will be able to make it work. But I think it’s crazy that I’m on my second kid with lots of ear infections and I’m just now learning this!

Dairy can prevent some antibiotics from being absorbed properly, and therefore they become ineffective. So it’s best to avoid dairy as instructed.

@Sams Mom: @MrsADS: it wasn’t on the printed label but it was on the handout of info, which I never read because seeing lists of possible side effects never helps me ;) if I hadn’t asked about refrigeration the pharmacist wouldn’t have come over and no one would have told me. I’m going to do my best but it’s a little crazy to expect a baby not to have milk! He doesn’t associate it with sleep, thankfully.

My son has to take it anytime he needs antibiotics due to his allergy to all the cillins, but I don't remember ever being told that. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

@MommySLP: I thought my older son had taken it before but I never remember having to avoid dairy so either recommendations have changed or we weren’t informed before!

@jhd: yes my 18mo on it right now and we have been told the same thing. It’s definitely challenging to figure out breakfast/dinner plans so she doesn’t have dairy!! Good luck!

Anyone had cefdinir for a toddler and been told to avoid dairy 2 hours before and after the dose? DS2 is almost 1 and weaning off the bottle but this seems like a bit of a challenge!
