@MaryM: I'm not celiac, but it was suspected for awhile. Just chiming in to say that the biopsy isn't bad at all! It's a couple of hours at the hospital- they put you out (or use that 'twilight sleep' stuff, thread the tube down your nose or throat (I think throat), and check out your GI tract and take small pieces. It's also called an endoscopy I think. It wasn't a FUN day, but I don't remember anything about the procedure and was pretty dopey for the rest of the day. I saw a gastroenterologist for my results.

@MaryM: I saw a gastroenterologist and had an upper gi/endoscopy done to confirm celiac. Perhaps your doctor can transfer results to a gastro to help interpret?

@mrschickpea: Do you see an RE, or just an endocrinologist? Is there a difference or such a distinction? Sorry if these are off the wall questions. I'm just not sure where to start

@MaryM: I see an Endo for my thyroid issues and mine were in a "normal" range when I started but definitely not optimal for pregnancy (TSH <2) Hashimotos came from TPO antibodies in addition to hypothyroidism. There are quite a few studies/articles relating a higher TSH with miscarriages and trouble conceiving, I was very surprised!

@MaryM: for what its worth, I'd highly recommend getting a biopsy done (I assume your doctors have already checked thyroid levels?). Its the one way to know for sure, and once you know- you know. I felt a great sense of relief in my diagnosis because I"d been sick for so long. It was a major lifestyle change, and I still have occasional slip ups (and I'm terrified that my recent MC was related, but have to push that out of my mind for now). But it hasn't been that hard.
If you have Celiac disease you can't have ANY gluten (like, no french fries if they are fried in oil with breading, etc), so it can be helpful to know how strict you need to be if you do end up making diet changes.

@mrschickpea: I'm not sure exactly what my OBGYN has tested thyroid wise, but I know they've mentioned it and run blood work for it and no red flags have come up.

But it's something I want to ask more about. My OB is willing to start some testing even though we've "only" had two losses, so I imagine they might start with the thyroid?

I have been diagnosed with PCOS, but with metformin and the occasional progesterone I've been able to ovulate somewhat regularly.

@MaryM: do you know if you have any thyroid issues? They could be tied together. I have Hashi's and need to be mostly gluten free for my antibodies to not attack my thyroid. The antibodies can also sometimes attack fetuses as they can't tell if they are foreign matter to the body, causing miscarriages  We've been trying for almost 7 months now with no pregnancy so I'm not yet sure if I will have any issues :bummed:

@MaryM: A gastroenterologist, as the hospital. My PCP ran the blood test because of symptoms I was having (GI issues like cramping and diarrhea, and fatigue were the biggest ones).

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease via a blood test by my PCP, but I also did the biopsy to confirm. Honestly, the biopsy wasn't that bad. They gave me so many meds I was just out of it all day long.

@MaryM: Oh I thought it was definitive. I would probably go to an endocrinologist and see what they suggest. They can probably give you a better idea of what low immunoglobulin means, and whether it's something that might be tied to repeat pregnancy loss, and then go from there. Good luck!

@Truth Bombs: The test he took doesn't confirm if you do or don't have it, but it gives you a better idea of the "chances" of you having it...

But it seems like there really isn't anything that conclusively diagnoses it outside of the biopsy. But I think I might prefer to spend $250 than have my insides biopsied?

I would do the test your brother took. $250 doesn't sound like a lot to get a legitimate answer.

If you've been officially diagnosed with celiac or gluten sensitivity, how was it that it was discovered/diagnosed?

My niece was diagnosed last year. After that, my brother's family had a lot of testing done since it's genetic. My brother carries a gene that gives you a 1/200 chance of having celiac, so he went GF along with his daughter.

My sister and I had the blood test. Her's was negative, but mine was inconclusive because my immunoglobulin (sp?) A was low.

Now that I've lost a second pregnancy, I'm wondering if it could be gluten related (or even immunity since my immoglobulin was low?). But before I make that lifestyle change, I'd like to now for sure. And my OBGYN ran the blood test, and wasn't really sure how to interpret the findings. It was a little over their heads.

Did you see an endocrinologist for the final diagnosis? A gastroenterologist? Someone else?

My SIL asked her doctor (not sure what type) about me when I got the low immunoglobulin result, and they said I could either just to go GF and see how I feel or have an intestinal biopsy (that does NOT sound fun!). Or I can take the test my brother took to check my genes and assess my risk, but that's $250...
