I love hardwood. I especially love the hardwood we installed in our home. The installer said the fact we do not kids or pets is a good thing because the wood we chose will easily scuff. Given that by the time we have kids the hardwood will not be new and I won't care about scuffs, scrapes, or dents.

Just recently, I visited new luxury model homes and many of the downstairs shared spaces were tiled. The rooms looked gorgeous and pristine with shiny marble or travertine. If price were no object we would probably use travertine throughout thw house.

My vote is for hardwood...the kind with a texture do a better job of hiding wear and you can always throw a rug over it for softness (which you can always replace if it gets too nasty).

Are you going to have more children? Are all of yours walking proficiently? I ask that because I've lived in all three types of flooring situations with LO and with a crawler/early walker I really prefer carpet. Yes, it can get kind of gross and yeah, it's not as aesthetically pleasing as wood, but if you can wait until everyone is walking comfortably to ditch the carpet, I'd do that. It's a totally different thing to take a tumble on carpet than on ceramic tile or even hardwood.

Also, with respect to the food in the carpet, I'd get a tightly woven indoor-outdoor rug under the dining table, stat. They are fairly cheap (mine was sub-$100), spray down nicely, and catch any goopy stuff before it is embedded in your carpet. The trade-off is that it will probably ruin your carpet by matting it down, but if you're going to replace it anyhow, who cares? ;)

I love hardwood. The tile in our bathrooms is always so cold and really unforgiving.

We're in the process of laying hardwoods! We used to have carpet and would get it professionally cleaned every other month because we have two big shedding dogs... dust, dirt, hair... ew. Our plan was always to renovate, and now that we're expecting... we have a deadline!

We chose a really hard-rated wood to minimize dents and scrapes, and the color has lots of variety (dark streaks on a mostly medium light tone). It's feels soooooo much cleaner and the house seems less dusty already. I would vote for any solid surface over carpet! And it's going to be cleaner for your LO to crawl around/play on!

i would opt for hardwood because tile can get really cold (although if you live in a warmer area this might not be an issue) and also because hardwood for some reason seems "softer" to me than tile. this probably doesn't make sense, but i'm more worried if LO were to have a fall in the bathroom on the tile as opposed to out in the family room on our hardwood floors.

ETA: i am super impressed that you guys steam clean your carpets so regularly! i should do that, but don't.

I really want to do tile in our basement, with in floor heating. My husband wants to do laminate down there, because it's a high traffic area...having said that, hardwoods are not ideal if you want to do deep cleaning with steam, because they warp.

Love our hardwoods. Our hardwood is kind of "rustic" looking (as is the décor of the rest of our house) which is perfect because it already has dings and scratches so if it gets a few more, they fit right in!

Hardwood floors are pretty and classic and I think they would be softer to fall on than ceramic tile.

The downsides are: they scratch pretty easily (even the scratch resistant kind), they generally show pet hair a LOT (especially if you get a mid or darker toned wood), and you have to be VERY careful with liquids. If something gets spilled and you clean it up immediately no biggy, but if you let a puddle of water sit on there it can ruin those boards and you'll need to get them refinished or replaced.

Also hardwood is more expensive than tile.

I love hardwood. I really dislike carpet too. I prefer getting smaller carpets that can be cleaned and replaced easier.

I think it depends on where you live. If you're somewhere warm all year round, then tile can work just fine. Otherwise, wood is best. You might also want to consider cork. We have it in our basement and love it!

i loathe wall to wall carpet, it's gross and full of dirt and germs and the carpet cleaners are often super toxic. so giving the option to change it, it would if i were you! you can always get area rugs. we have tile in the kitchen and bath and the rest of the rooms have bamboo, ours is too soft and is getting trashed, i wouldn't recommend it :( if your DH wants tile and you want hardwood, what about the tile that looks like hardwood? i was somewhere recently and they had new floors like that put in, i didn't realize it wasn't real wood until they pointed out that it was tile! i don't know the brand they used, but i'm sure you could google for ones with good reviews!

I am seriously hating our carpet right now mostly because of stuck on food and the stains (I have a toddler, an infant and three cats). DH steam cleans the carpet once a month and gets most of the stains out, but the stuck on food, well, it's really stuck there! DH and I want to get rid of the carpet, but we are torn. He wants ceramic tiles and I want hardwood. I wanted to hear your thoughts if you have the above mentioned flooring options. Please tell me the pros and cons. Thanks!
