Kind of like when you get a pap--not the best thing ever, but not horrible and over pretty quickly. My first one hurt when I wasn't dilated at all. They got progressively less uncomfortable and by the time I was in labor, they didn't bug me at all. When my doctor checked me it wasnt too bad but some of the nurses just werent as delicate as she was so it hurt much more. It also depends on how dilated you are. It was a little uncomfortable during but otherwise I didn't have any lasting pain or bleeding once they were done. The first check (before contractions became bad) barely hurt. I just felt some pressure. But once the contractions started, holy crap it was uncomfortable!!! I've read other posts about them being painful at the office, but I think it depends on the person performing the exam. Up there with the fingers. When my doctor did it, it was uncomfortable but fine. When I went into the hospital at 38 weeks with contractions, the nurse did it. It hurt, but I found if I didn't fight against them, it felt better. I tried to relax, but it's hard to. Any advice on what I can expect (pain, bleeding, etc?) or tips?
