there not to bad, there pretty fast (Atleast most docs are). but they do stick there fingers pretty far up....just grab something to grip. i just had my 39 week appointment where they strech you down there to help you dialate and that hurt but honestly not the worst pain.

I would much rather have a pap smear than a cervical check any day. They hurt me so much!

It's uncomfortable, but really not bad. Kind of like when you get a pap--not the best thing ever, but not horrible and over pretty quickly. My first one hurt when I wasn't dilated at all. They got progressively less uncomfortable and by the time I was in labor, they didn't bug me at all.

It is uncomfortable, but it depends on the size of the persons fingers and how fast they are. When my doctor checked me it wasnt too bad but some of the nurses just werent as delicate as she was so it hurt much more. It also depends on how dilated you are. It was much more uncomfortable the first time for me and then wasnt so bad the next time.

It was uncomfortable but I actually find routine pap smears more uncomfortable/painful. Good luck!

Like PP said, they'll use a couple fingers to check if/how far you are dilated. It was a little uncomfortable during but otherwise I didn't have any lasting pain or bleeding once they were done. My GYN actually does a similar exam, in addition to the pap, during my annual so it just reminded me of that.

I got checked at probably 28-30 weeks because of horrible back pain and slight cramping (I'm high-risk...can't see this being done normally). Nothing really any worse IMO than having a pap done and it took less than 2 minutes.

I never had my first check until I was actually in labor. The first check (before contractions became bad) barely hurt. I just felt some pressure. But once the contractions started, holy crap it was uncomfortable!!! I've read other posts about them being painful at the office, but I think it depends on the person performing the exam. The nurse did my checks, and she had a small hand/fingers and was gentle.

Yes... Up there with the fingers. When my doctor did it, it was uncomfortable but fine. When I went into the hospital at 38 weeks with contractions, the nurse did it. Very uncomfortable and bled :(

I don't know if it's the same thing, but when I was checked during my delivery, they were up there with fingers to see how I was dialating. It hurt, but I found if I didn't fight against them, it felt better. I tried to relax, but it's hard to. It's over quickly though.

My 36 week doctor's appointment is next Tuesday and at my last appointment my doctor mentioned he would start doing cervical checks then.

Any advice on what I can expect (pain, bleeding, etc?) or tips?
