We have both and my 2.5 year old by far prefers the dry erase. She does well with markers, no problems so far.

My favorite thing about chalkboards is letting them paint with water. I would trust younger kids with markers.

We have an easel that has both (dry on one side and chalk on the other) she only uses the chalkboard side right now after leaving the caps off all the markers. I'll wait until she's older and understands "markers dry out"

Dry erase! Crayola makes dry erase crayons that wipe off with water.

I would go with a chalkboard. It can get dusty, but chalk cleans off easily with soap and water from hands and clothes. Markers, not so much.

Plus chalk can be used when it warm out to draw on the sidewalk/driveway.

I have done both with nanny kids. The dry erase works best with the five and up crowd or really diligent younger kids. The markers get expensive if they leave the lids off and toddlers can cause a lot of havoc with markers! Dry erase is my favorite though, frankly I hate writing on chalk boards!

Chalk boards seem to make the most sense with little ones. We liked the crayola chalk and I have also bought chalk markers to use with older kids or to put a cute design on it. Chalk washes out of things easily but it does make a lot of dust so it's best in an area without carpet underneath.

I want a big magnetic board for my kids' play area. Do you have a chalkboard or a dry erase board? What brand of board, chalks or markers did you buy?
