@yoursilverlining: that is such a good point- to someone handy it's just getting a tall ladder somehow and not that big of a deal. And paying someone is still way cheaper than a new fixture (which would still have to be hung!)

@Foodnerd81: haha...well maybe there is someone else somewhat handy that could help?!

Yes, I think it has made a huge difference...we painted both ours from brass to hammered metal - yes I painted the chain...hugely updating and WAY more cost effective. We plan to replace them both long term but this was a great first step.

I should note...I am a spray-paint aholic... I will pretty much paint anything old/wornout/dated that I get my hands on! ;)

I haven't done this, but have done other DIY involving paint and spray paint and I think it would be pretty easy!

@Foodnerd81: As you know living in New England, every other person is a "handyman" or their brother is. We have a guy who handles stuff like this. I'm sure you could find someone very easily to come in and take down/put up for cheap :silly:

I have! Not a chandelier, but brass sconces. My husband is pretty handy so getting it down was fairly easy. His recommendation was to take a picture of how the wires are so you can duplicate that when you put it back.

I used chalk paint. It was a two evening project (one coat each night) and pretty easy.

ETA: obviously a slow typer as people have already pretty much said what I said.

@Mrs D: So it made a big impact on the space? Also did you paint the chain too?

My dad is possibly the last person I would want on a ladder taking down a chandelier...

I've done it, with those old brass ones. My dad typically rewires them, and hangs though, so I can't speak to the complexity of it. I would think if you take enough photos of how it is mounted you'd be able to get it back up there again.

@Foodnerd81: I did this...I have spray painted two...my dad is comfortable with minor electrical stuff so he removed both from the ceiling for me ... I painted then he re-hung them...

Totally turned out great!

@FaithFertility: it's not actually painting the chandelier I'm most worried about. It's getting to down and wiring type stuff. But I didn't know they made spray chalk paint- even better!

Have you ever redone an existing chandelier? Like, paint or spray paint to update the look but keep the same fixture? Was taking it down worth the effort?

Long story: Our new house has a two story foyer with an OK brass chandelier. It fits the space fine, even if it's not anything special or my style, so we will wait to get some kind of fixture that we love down the line. I think spray painting it darker (oil rubbed bronze) or painting it with chalk paint would go a long way to making the foyer more our style but trying to get a chandelier down from the ceiling in a two story room sounds really challenging.

So, curious if anyone has done this and how much work it entailed. Blog posts and pinterest make it look so easy...

Eta: adding my inspiration photos.
