Totally unnecessary.
@Mama Bird: That's what we did, changed in the crib with a waterproof pad. When we moved, we got a new dresser for LO2 that is a good changing height and just change her on that.

Meh, I had a changing pad on top of the dresser, which is used for a few months. When my son was in sleeping in our room (birth-2ish months) I used the mat that came with my diaper bag on my bed. Once DS got super wiggly it was easier to just change him on the floor so I moved the pad to the floor. When we had a 2 story house I keep some diapers downstairs and would just lay down a blanket to change him.

So it really just depends on whether you see yourself using only 1 dedicate spot or want some flexibility (and to save some space) It sounds like just a pad/mat or two and a diaper caddy might work really well in your situation, especially if you can find a surface to use that would be the height you're comfortable standing at.

Wouldn't clutter up my house with one. Old prefolds, and a basket of diaper stuff in the storage ottoman is all we need for our second child. I had one for my first, and I started changing her on the floor when she got extra wiggly at about 8 months. Didn't even consider it this time.

I am so incredibly in love with my changing table. It is lightweight enough that it was not a ig deal to put it in our room when DD was a newborn wirh lots of diaper changes to her room (even though she still sleeps with us... I just couldn't stand the smell of the genie). We kept diapers, wipes, and a pad in the living room for wet diapers. One side of the changing table has three drawers. Top drawer is diapers, second drawer is her towels, third drawer is paper towels and diaper genie refills. On the other side is a removable hamper. I can't imagine not having it.

We have one one on top of his dresser that we've used all of a handful of times. There's a bed in the nursery so I usually just change him on there or on a blanket downstairs.

We have one on top of DD's dresser in her room so it doesn't take up any additional space. When downstairs we just leave a swaddle blanket on the carpet and use that to change her on. It hasn't bothered us to get down on the floor to do this and is super easy.

I'd say get two of the $15 summer infant change pads and put them in different parts of the house along with one of those shower caddies filled with diaper stuff. Try it for a month or two; worst case you buy a smaller table and have it shipped if your back is killing you or that situation just isn't working

We didn't use one for #1 but my mom asked for one for #2. They visit every other month or so. I set it up for the grandparents but we ended up using it all the time. It keeps LO1 out of LO2's dirty diaper and from playing with the cream and stuff.

When DD was born there wasn't room in her tiny bedroom for a change table, so we changed her on the foot of our bed on the diaper pad, pulling it out of the corner everytime we needed it. Added bonus was that we changed her facing us, and if she rolled she rolled on the bed not the floor. Although ususally she was strapped regardless.

I definitely find it to be necessary - I use it for every single nappy change, its in baby's room so I take her in there in the middle of the night. Its the biggest lifesaver when baby is mid nappy change and does a shart, or has had a nappy explosion. You don't want that nastiness on your bed/couch/floor!

Ours was essential with the first because we both have bad backs and we had a two story house so it lived in our living room. We now change our current baby mostly in the pack and play. We still have our changing table though. It now lives in the laundry room and I use it for folding!

We have a changing pad on a dresser with a box next to it for diaper supplies. It works really well, and I'm glad we didn't get an additional piece of furniture. But I like having a dedicated space that is at a perfect comfortable height to stand and change him. Now that he's mobile, it's too easy for him to run away if he's on the floor and wants to protest a diaper change, and it's much easier to grab him when I'm standing up as opposed to sitting on the floor.

supplies! We keep them everywhere. On her dresser top (with the pad) are diapers, wipes and cream. In our room, on my night table are a handful of diapers, wipes and cream (as well as lotions). Downstairs, we always have wipes at the table and I keep diapers and cream in our bathroom cabinet.

I really don't view the pad as a necessity, even though we have it.

@MamaG: the bathroom is how we do it. It's common practice here :-) I love that I can just rinse the baby in the shower if there's a blowout etc. Also it's usually warm in there so that's another bonus.

We have a changing pad on top of her dresser, which I guess is the same as having a changing table? Because we never remove it or anything. I like having it a lot, but I could probably just lay down a towel or something if we didn't. I think just having a designated space in your room, whether a cleared dresser or a towel on the bed, is the important part. So you don't have to think about where to change LO every single time, you just go do it, and you know there are supplies within reach.

I did what @edelweiss did. Those mats are great--I could put them anywhere, but we usually ended up on a bed or on the floor. I guess I'm lazy, because I always sat down on the bed or floor to change LO! My back was never in any sort of discomfort from hunching over. ;)

If you've got old towels, those would work instead of the mats, but the mats are cute!
