@Adira: No, the SD doesn't do before/after school care at the school. You have to go to the Y or one of the daycares in the area (one of which is the one we're touring next week).

@mediagirl: Not sure about timing transitions. We have to ask next week on our tour. The kids' birthdays are January (D) and February (A).

With this mess going on at the current center, I'd move now. Get it over with. Rip off the bandaid. You're going to do it anyways, why not now?

What are the transitions like at the new school - do they move rooms with the new school year or on their birthdays?

Just for clarification, does your school not have before/after-care? Our daycare also doesn't bus to the school that we're districted to, but we're just going to do before/after-care at the school instead of continuing with daycare.

If you have to (or want to) do a daycare though, it does make sense to switch him sooner, rather than later, especially since this is a time of turmoil for him anyway. Kids adjust pretty quickly at this age, so it might be a rough couple months, but then he'd adjust I think.

We will need to change daycares before D starts Kindergarten (which is not for another 2 years - fall 2018). Our current daycare doesn't bus to our districted elementary school, and our SD no longer allows intra-district transfers for daycare reasons (it says it right on the front page of the SD website, starting this school year). We had originally planned on transferring them Fall 2017, to give D a full year to get acclimated before starting Kindergarten. He's a pretty easy going kid, but big changes like that are stressful and he takes a bit to adjust.

Case in point. His current preschool teacher, who we LOVED, just up and left about 2 or 3 weeks before Thanksgiving. Like, left for lunch on Friday and just never came back. Since then, D has been shuffled around from classroom to classroom while they interview, hire, and train a new teacher. His class was just him and his 7 best friends (all boys) and this teacher who was amazing. And now they're all split up and there's absolutely NO consistency and stability. And then we were out for a week on vacation in Florida with my parents. So this whole week, drop-off has been a nightmare. This morning, I had to sit with him for close to 10 minutes with him just having tears streaming down his face. I asked him if he doesn't feel well, if anyone's hurting him at school, all that stuff, and he says no. He says he misses Miss P (his teacher who left) and J (his very best friend). Another teacher had to literally peel him off of me and I had to walk away from him screaming and crying, with tears streaming down my own face.

I'm now thinking maybe we should try to switch them sooner, so we just go through these big changes all at once, rather than get him settled into whatever his new routine will be with whatever new teacher they hire, and then change everything again in a few months when we move centers.

We're touring the center that we're likely to move them to next Tuesday. When I called I said we were looking to move them probably in the summer, so A would be in the 1-year room and D would go into a pre-K room. If we moved them now, A would go into the infant room. The director was pretty specific when I called about the infant vs. 1-year room, so I don't even know if they'd have room if we decided to transfer sooner rather than later.

What would you do? Try to move soon to get all the transitions over with, or wait this period out and move later next year?
