@Mama Bird: mole checks are no big deal! I’m pretty moley, most of mine are nevus moles. Ive also had a few removed which is also pretty much a non event. It’s also good to get your kids in so they can watch for changes from baseline - particularly during puberty some can get weird

@pachamama: @lamariniere: oh good, it sounds like mole checks aren't as scary as I thought. For some reason I was thinking they go straight to biopsy if anything looks funny. I'm probably going to make it a family appointment too, because I have one mole that's behaving oddly and I've been meaning to get it checked.

My LOs both have Type I skin and it seems like my DS has inherited my DH’s propensity for large moles. I’ve been taking my DS to the derm for an annual mole check since he was about 3 (he’s 7 now), and usually we do the whole family at once since we are all very fair. We’ve been living in a tropical climate for the last year, and this summer I was concerned because I had noticed one of his larger moles had changed. At the appointment, the derm said it looked fine, but to always just keep an eye on it. I don’t think it could hurt to go for a baseline visit and then do annual checks going forward.

ETA: I don’t think there’s anything to freak out about with a mole check. If you’ve never had one, it’s completely painless and my son actually thinks it’s kind of funny. Your child will be in their undies and the Dr will just look over their whole body/moles with a magnifying light or a kind of special eye piece. It’s pretty quick. I’ve never had it done, but I think some docs even take full body photos in order to compare subsequent visits. Luckily, none of us have ever had anything suspicious that required further testing.

Is your son fair skinned? Those types of complexions are the most susceptible to moles and freckles and unfortunately, skin cancer but I think noticing changes this early doesn't necessarily mean anything. You wouldn't have to freak him out by going to a derm...just say you're going to check out the moles and get a baseline. For fair skin kids it's almost routine anyway. My son developed quite a few beauty marks his first year.

Are small, but asymmetrical and growing moles normal for a five-year-old? DS has a whole bunch, and most of them sprouted up in the last year or two. On one hand, I'm kind of freaked out, because he spends a lot of time in the sun (but he's never been sunburned). On the other hand, I'm covered with funny-shaped moles myself, and I assume they sprouted up at some point, but I just tend to get really freckly and spotted in my old age so they don't really seem like anything unusual. I don't think I had many at five, though!

I'm waffling about seeing a dermatologist - if this is nothing, I really don't want to freak DS out, and possibly make him get unnecessary testing.
