I have this Soft Gear changing pad and I don't think it needs a cover. It's the BEST baby gear item I received. LO pees at least once a day before I can get a diaper on him and it's so easy to just wipe this pad down. Changing a cover is one more thing to worry about, so I'm glad to skip it. If it's super cold I might toss a towel over it, but most of the time its fine. I seriously love this changing pad - I move it all over the house. If I put it on the floor, LO is content to lie in it in the bathroom while I shower or in the kitchen while I was dishes.

I am with @Crumbs: on the disposable liners... We have a cover on our changing pad, but also use the liners... Excellent for baby boys that like to pee during changes!

We also have a liner under the sheet and I see your point, wasn't sure if it was necessary but got one.

I didn't need them. We bought 2 packs of cheap cloth covers from Ikea to put on her Mebby Jelly changing pad. Plus we put disposable liners on top of that.

We have never even opened the second pack (2 in a pack). I only really need 1 of the cloth covers but the other is covering our second changing pad downstairs (that we never use).

We do need tons of the disposable liners though. Those are a lifesaver!!

We only have 1 changing pad cover and use a hand towel on top of it which we change out every day or so. Most of our accidents on the towel are spit up, not diaper related. We could probably just go with towels right on the cover but this way the towels stay put a little better.

We bought 2 10-packs of hand towels from Costco that we use everywhere for baby since she likes to spit up a lot. I figure te hand towels are cheaper and easier to replace/re use around the house than changing covers (although they aren't terribly pricy either).

You guys are making me think I should register for 3 changing pad covers instead of 2! They're pretty cheap anyways, so I'd rather not have to always be worried if I had one in the wash!

We got 2 mattress pad covers because I splurged on our Naturepedic mattress! I know it's waterproof too, but it was such a big ticket item and I want it to be in good condition for when we have baby #2 too. Baby isn't here yet, but for us, it's worth protecting the investment!

We have 3 changing pad covers. LO is only 12 days old and we've already been through them each twice due to diaper mishaps. I don't change them daily unless they are dirty. They don't add any extra effort to our routine so far because we just throw them in with LO's laundry, which we do fairly often anyway. It probably also makes it slightly more comfy for him, which is nice because he doesn't love being cold for diaper changes.

We do not use a changing pad cover. We bought a Serta changing pad and it's pretty well cushioned. It's so easy to wipe down after a messy diaper. Since my LO never knew the difference, he doesn't care if it's cold.

We do have a mattress pad cover, just because I think liquid could seep in eventually if your LO were to have an accident and you didn't catch it right away. In the early weeks, we layered with a full fitted pad first, then a small unfitted pad on top and then a crib sheet over that. Since he wasn't moving around, we only had to change the small pad if necessary.

We use a changing pad cover because the plastic is cold in the winter and sticky in the summer, plus I like the way they look. We have two, when one gets messy, I swap them out. We never put any cover on the mattress other than her sheet. The mattress is plastic and doesn't need any more protection. FWIW, I've only had 2 times in almost 10 months where we have needed to change the sheet in her bed because of spit up or anything like that.

I would get a mattress protector, but I don't think a changing pad cover is necessary. We have two, but if they're both dirty before laundry day it's not a big deal. Sometimes I'll wait a long time before putting one back on. Or I'll just throw a receiving blanket down so it's not so cold.

We have that gummy cooshee changer. I don't think they make pads that cover it so I plan on just laying down a burp cloth or gerber cloth diaper for messy changes. I did get a mattress pad cover because ours isn't plasticky/coated. I figured it was essential.

Both are pretty necessary for us. We have a mattress cover that is safe but it made her mattress more comfortable (safe as in, it's obviously not a memory foam or anything). The Carter's changing pad covers are the ones we used + a plastic oval looking mat over it to prevent from cleaning the changing pad constantly.

The advice we were given was to layer your crib bedding. We put on a protector pad, a sheet, another pad, another sheet. This way, when LO uses the crib and has an accident, we just pull it off and don't have to remake the crib. For the changing pad, we put a cover on it and then put on a few waterproof pads that are slightly smaller than the changing pad.

Clorox wipe or not, poo stains. I happily put covers on everything, so all I have to do is throw them in the laundry. I don't have time or patience to scrub.

Definitely have more than one changing pad cover, early on all I did was wash them. I usually had a little pad to put under him that was easy to change out too. Newborn poo gets everywhere.

I think the mattress protector will be more useful when he is going through potty training and has accidents.

@septemberlove: I'm a FTM too, so I'm not much help, but I can tell you that we bought a changing pad cover but not a mattress cover. I just hate the look of the changing pad without a cover. Plus, after baths and during the summer, I'd hate for her to stick to the plastic. The terry cover we got will be much more comfortable. I total agree with you on the mattress cover though. Our crib mattress is vinyl, so it will be easier to wipe it down than wash a fabric mattress cover.

We use changing pad covers (we love the Carter's super soft ones: http://www.amazon.com/Carters-Super-Soft-Changing-Cover/dp/B0016LVEGQ) and I would totally recommend it. More so than cleanliness, I think it's nice for baby's comfort, since the plastic doesn't feel very nice against the skin. We rotated 3, since there were so many blowouts and pee accidents in the early days. They've held up very well through multiple washes, and 10.5 months later, are still as soft as ever.

We also have the mattress cover but I don't know how useful/important that is since, like you say, the mattress is pretty easy to clean, and the cover doesn't add more comfort or anything.

I love my changing pad cover and honestly, wouldn't want to put LO on it without one. It is plasicky, but I can't imagine it's very soft or comfy. Plus, they are pretty cheap and make the changing pad prettier. :) I have two I alternate though and LO is a big spitter, so I keep a cloth diaper/burp cloth where I place her head and that has saved me from having to change the pad constantly. I've only had one or two times where LO has gotten pee or poo on the changing pad cover. If I know it's a messy poop that has leaked, I'll put either a disposable liner down or a burp cloth. And honestly, you'll be doing so much laundry that a changing pad cover won't matter.

I think the reason for the mattress pad or protector is so that if LO has an accident in the middle of the night you can just whip off the sheet and pad, and then put a sheet back on and put LO back to bed. This saves you time from cleaning in the middle of the night. We haven't had to deal with this yet. They also sell something called the ultimate crib sheet (I think) and you put it on top of your sheet and it snaps on the crib slats, and it's a protector as well. This way if there' s an accident you just snap it off and put LO right back in the crib.

Personally, I love stuff like this. The conveniences are so worth it for me, but yes you can definitely live without some of this stuff. Of the two, I'd go with the changing pad cover if I had to have one or the other. It's seen more and honestly you will use that changing pad more frequently.

I'm working on my registry and going off some baby essential lists I googled.

We have our crib, mattress, changing table, and changing pad... I'm just curious why I need a changing pad cover. It's fairly plasticky and I'm thinking it'd be easier to keep some Clorox wipes nearby and wipe it off after each diaper change, rather than trying to wash an extra cover nearly every day. Can anybody weigh in and tell me why it's useful? As a FTM I just don't have a clue, so it's much much appreciated!! :)

I have the same question about a mattress protector. I'm going to use a fitted sheet on the crib mattress, but I don't really see the point of the mattress protector since the mattress is also quite plasticky and I think it'd be much easier to use a clorox wipe to sanitize the mattress as needed. We have a mattress protector on our bed, but our mattress isn't plastic! lol, again, any advice you experienced mommies have would be greatly appreciated :)
