@birdofafeather: Agree, I tend to over think these things sometimes too! Kids really are great.

@KayKay: Yes, at age 3, she occasionally talked about a few friends and asked about her "purple school" but honestly after a year or so she's stopped mentioning it too much. When she asked why she moved we told her they didn't have enough seats in the classroom for her.

@lovehoneybee: I'd do it! The time you save will be so nice, and the money too. E's old enough that you can explain and talk about the change a lot. It might be an adjustment but I agree that kids are resilient!

we just changed preschools and it was a huge success! we had to do it because we moved. So not only did he leave the only home he has known, we also moved him out of his crib into a new room/bed, AND a new preschool all in the same week (and took away his pacifier, lol!). I am amazed at how well everything went.

He was at the old daycare/preschool for almost a year and loved it as well. He had friends and teachers that he would talk about when not there, I was so worried about moving him. He is 2 years and 9 months. What made the transition so easy was the teachers I think, he really took a liking to one of them and it is a smaller class. Also it is all new fun toys to play with and things to do.

The first day, i stayed with him for over 30 minutes before I left because he was nervous with all new faces, but once he felt safe and secure, i left and there were no tears. Since then there have been a few difficult drop offs, but it's mostly good and easy these days. One day i went to pick him and he didn't want to leave! that never happened at the old daycare.

And the best part for us is that it is so close to where we live, we can walk him over instead of drive which saves us a good 20 minutes on my commute in the morning and I LOVE it. every minute counts in the morning. I actually get to work on time now. And bonus it was a bit cheaper too.

To get him ready for the switch, we started telling him a month in advance that we were moving and going to a new home and new daycare and I think it helped because he was also excited to see his new daycare and would talk about it before we actually moved.

K is 3.25 and on her third daycare/preschool. She did a daycare from 0-2, preschool last year 2-3, and then a new preschool starting next week. And, honestly, depending on our housing situation, she could do a different preschool again for PreK. I'd love to have been able to keep her at the same place, but those were known consequences of having to move for DHs medical training. This latest switch has been the hardest, in the sense that she actually had friends that she remembers and talks about. So sometimes it breaks my heart a little bit to hear her say she misses them...but other than that she still seems excited for the new school and eager to make new friends too. Do what you need to do, and I'm sure it will be fine!

@lovehoneybee: I switched my DS at 3.5 - it took a few weeks for him to adjust at drop offs (super shy kid) but overall he did great! His new teacher was fabulous!!!

We moved DS at 3.5. We moved apartments and the new daycare is a 2 minute walk from our place. Keeping him in the old daycare would have meant a 1 hour round trip for me to drop him off and return home every day. Cost wasn't a factor since they were more or less the same price. I stayed with DS at school for an hour for the first 2 days and he was fine! He has been really happy and thriving at his school and we switch almost exactly a year ago.

@regberadaisy: Yeah, it's a preschool. 3+. My mom recently moved in with us and will be watching baby sister for at least a while after I go back to work. She'd watch him as well, but he loves school SO much and is thriving and we don't want to take him out. I'll want to put her in daycare eventually for the same reason, but I have more time to find someplace that will take her (ideally close). I'm hoping to minimize the overlap as much as possible though (E will start K in 2 years).

As for my leave....yeah. They activated a special sick leave for me. My paid sick leave has to be used up (I don't have much, because toddler...), and then I have the option of using paid annual and/or personal time (also not much). After that the special sick time kicks in...basically an extended FMLA. I can take up to 6m unpaid but with benefits, or a year and pay OOP for my benefits. I'm reallllly hoping to get her out by NYE...tax credit will help offset that a bit.

We have a lot of *great* benefits--the total cost of this pregnancy and L&D will either be $65 or $90, depending on whether or not I have to pay a second $25 co-pay at the practice I switched to, and that includes a $15 fee for the first office to fill out and fax to my HR, plus a $25 co-pay when I first went to get my iud out (much better than the 7k or so we paid for E, lol!) but the maternity leave is still really shitty.

Yeah, I would totally switch him! I think I often overthink things instead of realizing that kids are resilient and change is part of life, especially when it's saving time and money! And you won't feel bad about keeping him in school on unpaid maternity leave if you're saving so much! (Crossing my fingers this is a true statement. ;) )

@lovehoneybee: is the new place a daycare or only preschool? A lot of just preschools don't take infants. Something to consider if you plan to go back after leave. And wait, you don't get maternity leave? How is that possible with a civil job?!

We changed at 3 and it was mostly great! It took her awhile to adapt from a play based daycare to a Montessori preschool, but I am so glad I moved her. She really thrived in her new environment.

@Truth Bombs: Honestly? It'll save us time and money. The tuition is almost half of what we're paying now, and it'll cut my daily commute from a bit over an hour a day to about 20 minutes. My maternity leave will be unpaid, so we're trying to save money wherever we can, and as much as we all love his current daycare, the monthly tuition is almost as much as our rent.

Our daycare closed in July, DS had been there since he was 15 weeks old and he is 3. I was worried about the transition but he has done great! He needs a few extra cuddles before I drop him off but he was doing that at his old daycare too.

Following! LO has been at the same place since she started but we're switching her next year when she turns 3 (the place we're switching her to is only preschool and Pre-K so starts at 3). I like the place she's at now but I think the programs offered at the new place are too good to pass up.

We are looking into switching R. We can't decide. Where she is now just is lacking motivation, at least it seem to us. But loves her teachers and friends. I love and hate the small class rooms. We looked at another place today, it was awesome. But the class is a lot bigger and I am worried she wouldn't do great with it.

We've been casually looking for a preschool that's closer to home (and cheaper, honestly), and I think we've found one, but I'm pretty nervous about it...E's been at the same daycare with the same kids for a year and a half, and he LOVES it there and it's a great place, and I've really been dragging my feet about moving him. But I happened upon a new place, and if seems like it could be a great fit for us...like 3 blocks from our house, and about half what we are paying right now. But I'm so nervous to move him!

Has anyone done it for an older toddler? (E is 3). How did your LO handle the transition? E just moved into the preschool room this week, and every morning when he gets up he says "I'm going to have a great day at preschool!" :(
