In NYC, bathrooms are usually really tiny and sometimes its just one unisex one. I rarely notice a changing table available at all, but maybe i'm eating at a lot of places that aren't kid friendly.

I am not sure. Usually I take her if we have to change her in public.

We were driving back from Christmas and stopped for lunch somewhere. They had no changing table. The car was packed, so there was no room in the car either. I laid disposable mats on the floor then the padded one but it really grossed me out, even though she didn't touch anything.

I actually have no idea if there are changing stations readily available for my husband to use! I usually did the changing or just used the stroller, gross, I know.

I've also leveraged the sink area.

We tend to assume there isn't one in the men's room and more often I just do the change myself. :( Not fun but at least there is something. We have been at restaurants where there weren't any which is worse.

@Mrs tartan: I bet moms wouldn't mind if a dad came into the women's room, but non-moms would be like wtf get out!

@SweetMamaM: those family rooms sound amazing! I want one!

I don't think that there are any change tables in the men's room in NZ but they aren't often in the ladies' room either. That's why malls are so popular over here with parents with young children as they have parent lounges with couches, microwaves for formula, play areas, parent and child toilets (one room, two toilets with one being toddler-sized for your toilet training buddy) and change tables. There are even feeding cubicles for those who are shyer or whose little ones get distracted. The first time hubby and I were in one, he was astounded at how flash they were!

Honestly? We have only used family bathroom since having LO. We both go in and one holds the diaper bag while the other does the change.
I never asked DH about the men's room.

My husband does all the diaper changes while we are out. He says probably more than 80% of the time there is one. Usually he finds them in the handicapped stall.

So irritating. We went on a road trip and made a stop. DH went to the bathroom and I told him to look for a changing table and there wasn't one. I went into the women's bathroom and there was a nice clean changing table, A diaper genie, and a place to set your bag. There was also a bench in there (could be used for nursing I suppose).

DH is always willing to change diapers out and about but sometimes it's impossible!

It's hard because by code we're not required to put a changing table in any bathroom. And it's a hard item to convince a small business owner to put in. When you do then suddenly it's an item you have to design around including accessibility issues. Which you can imagine means more space. Which means more money and less revenue.

Sadly, the norm still is that mostly it's the mom that takes child to diaper changes. So if a diaper changing station is going in it's always the women's room.

Yes. Definitely one of the perks we can now benefit from as parents (I don't have to be the only one changing diapers when we're out together). But the changing tables aren't always in the men's bathroom - it's in a unisex bathroom or parent bathroom. But if there isn't a family bathroom, there's always one in both (men's and women's).

No and it's annoying. I hate that the expectation is that the woman does all the baby care. My husband changes most of the diapers and can't do it as easily when we are out.

In the UK there are lots of seperate changing rooms. As a woman I would have absaloutely no problem with a dad coming into the woman's bathroom if that's where the only changing table was.

it's very frustrating that there aren't always changing tables in the mens rooms around here. my husband takes the kids out by himself a lot. one day we went to a restaurant and both kids had poopy diapers(naturally), so we decided to divide and conquer, and each take a kid. however, there wasn't a changing table in the mens room, so I got the lovely pleasure of changing both diapers.

A local mall has a unisex lounge outside of the entrance to the men's and women's bathrooms with a few cushy chairs and a big changing station. This is the perfect solution - everyone has the same access and you don't have change the baby in the actual restroom. At least here, those plastic koala station are usually kind of gross.

Ugh, that's BS. Whenever we've had to change her at a restaurant there's either been no changing tables at all or changing tables in both. We rarely have to change her in public, though, because we change her right before we leave and are usually only gone for an hour or two at a time.

Went to a men's bathroom yesterday to change a messy diaper, and had to do it in on the floor. Meanwhile, the woman's bathroom there had a deluxe wood changing table with free wipes. I'm always surprised at the ongoing disparity between men and women's bathrooms.

Is your area good about having changing tables in both bathrooms?
