Thankfully my son isn't into characters or cartoons yet so we don't really have this issue in terms of a power struggle. I generally don't like character clothing because yes it's tacky looking, but mostly because they are often made of some awful fabric. My boys are sweaty and I'm picky about getting them soft cotton clothing that's comfortable to play hard in but can be comfortably worn for naps. They hardly even wear shirts with collars, denim, and fleece as a result. The weird rayon/polyester blends a lot of the character clothes comes feels gross to me. DS has a few cotton Mickey baby leggings my mom got him and the boys have matching cotton Superman PJs but so far that's it.

Our preschool isn't media free in its dress code but does not allow clothing that has elements of fighting or violence. So no ninja turtles, superheroes like Iron Man or Batman or Superman, anything with aggressive speech, clothing that has angry or aggressive looking creatures on it, etc. So I assume paw patrol or Thomas is fine.

I try to avoid it because my LO is a toddler and gets very opinionated about what he wears. If he had Paw Patrol or Thomas stuff it would be all he wanted to wear.

The only characters I love are Hello Kitty and Minnie so DD has some clothes with those characters. However she does love Elsa and Ariel so we have pajamas with those characters. I don't mind that much since it's not her entire wardrobe and she is so happy when she wears them!

@tlcbaby: I think the reasons they don't want character stuff at her preschool are competition between the kids and also they were apparently having issues getting them to use their own names at some point (one teacher mentioned that the girls all wanted to be called Elsa). I think the turning point was last year when one little girl showed up as Elsa for Halloween and then continued to wear the costume for the next 3 days straight (her mom said she refused to wear any other clothes). The announcement that no character clothing would be allowed came pretty soon after that. Heh.

We really try to avoid it. I find that people interact with my daughter differently when she's wearing character stuff (talking to her about her appearance instead of what she is doing ie "wow look at your my little pony helmet it's so pretty!" Instead of "you are going so fast on your bike").

LO is too young to get into any characters yet, but I'm not a fan of character clothing or shoes, so I won't encourage her. :silly: She did get a Frozen dress from her grandparents & admittedly, I've never put it on her.

I think we've passed the peak of character clothing, my son is almost 6 now and his interest is waning. Right now, we have two tees , one of minions and one with spongebob and patrick. He did have Lightening McQueen crocs, but those are also done for.

Oh, and his bathing suits. He's also got TMNT, Mario Brothers and Minions there too.

I really never cared if my son was into character clothing or not. It wasn't going to be the battle I was going to fight and it turned out not to be that bad after all.

@jhd: same for me! I'm fine with character stuff but it's words that drive me crazy. I think the sayings are usually too weird for me.

That said my kid doesn't have an interest in most characters yet so he doesn't have tons of character stuff other than a few Thomas and superhero tshirts. I'm willing to get it for him when he wants it though because he's usually really excited to wear the stuff he loves and it makes getting dressed less of a battle.

I just don't go out of my way to buy it, but honestly that's because I do most of our kids clothes shopping online (with minimal input from them), have them try it on once it arrives, and assuming it fits & there are no complaints about comfort, we keep it. So there isn't that much opportunity for them to even see other options!

That being said, other people have bought her a handful of character things at times, and she wears it.

I enjoying buying her whatever she likes as long as there is not too much glitter on it. I hate finding glitter all over the place. If it's it made with a glitter that doesn't rub off too much then I am ok with character clothing.

I guess I'm in the minority, I don't understand how/why someone would hate character clothing on kids. Is it the majority of his wardrobe? No. Would I wear one myself? No. But he likes Blaze, Mickey, Elmo and others, and if he's excited to put on a shirt with them, I'm happy to do it. He's two, who cares?

Yes but only when they are old enough to care or want it. Mostly it is Thomas. I think they both have 2 short and 2 long sleeve Thomas shirts and a sweatshirt. There are also other random character things too. I swore up and down when LO1 was a baby and my in-laws bought everything Mickey that my kids would never wear character stuff. But now, if it makes them happy and willing to get dressed, I don't care!

She has one character shirt, all character undies, and I'm making her a Paw Patrol dress for her birthday parties. I didn't want to do character bedding, but she picked it out and loves it. I just made sure she got a nice, solid comforter that coordinates and I don't have to look at the sheets. Oh, and she has a Hello Kitty rain jacket, but it's adorable.

I tried not to for a long time but when she became a toddler, she started only wanting to wear character clothes (which my dad always buys for her). So we went through a phase of it. Now that she's in a preschool where character clothes are not allowed, it is actually easier. We only have undies now.
