I taught older kids, so we didn't really have parties. And I would say on 50% of the kids showed up in Halloween themed outfits or costumes (some schools allowed costumes, others allowed Halloween themed t-shirts) and 50% didn't. So if you weren't participating, it wasn't obvious or exclusionary.

There was also a "character day" during Spirit Week, and sometimes the library would host a "dress like your favorite book character" day during Book Week!

@meganmp: the public schools near me all have uniforms. I love that! Oh yeah, the mighty patriotic oath is bothersome for some. Even when a child sits quietly I feel they are still participating because they are being respectful.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think that the character day is helpful to some people (not all) in terms of getting their kids to school. For the parents who don't want their kid at school with a bunch of little dressed up goblins and slutty pumpkins (or whatever), character day helps. It's also more in line with education. For those who are opposed to worshiping any idol at all, it still doesn't help. On that note, neither does the law stating that the pledge of allegiance must be done in every classroom, every day. Yeah, the kids don't have to say it, but it's still happening. I just think character day might mitigate the problem for some.

That being said, I hate dress up days, regardless of the reason. We're a uniform school (although still public), and the days when kids can dress as they please causes behavior problems to skyrocket. Just call me the Grinch, I guess:)

ETA: I realized how much the pledge of allegiance part of what I wrote is weird, but it exemplifies what I'm talking about. It's a barrier for some.

I am fine with no costumes for Halloween, my son goes to a preschool where they don't dress up, but they still have a "party" and carve a pumpkin.

I personally didn't dress up past 3rd grade, I just wasn't into it, lol.

@meganmp: ok, i can see why Halloween is out basemen onyour eexplanation.

How is character day any different for people that don't celebrate Halloween? Would a Jehovah Witness be okay celebrating a fictional character/ idol? The JW's I know would not like that either.

@Mamaof2: I'm actually in agreement with this policy at school. I have so many kids that are not allowed to come to school on Halloween because it is not celebrated in their family, and the kids don't want to feel left out by not participated in parties. I hate it when they feel left out, so we don't do ANYTHING in my classroom. Costumes are not allowed at school at all- they're distracting, they can be scary for the little guys, and I've had more than one parent call and get mad at ME because their kid ruined their costume at recess. They're not saying that you can't wear a costume to go trick or treating, they're saying that there is not a place for kids wearing the Scream mask at school. If schools have character day, isn't that a GOOD thing? I mean, it's encouraging kids to focus on books! :):):)

I heard on the radio that there are religious people who want to change the name to Holy-ween, because Halloween is apparently prime time for getting initiated into the occult. Maybe I'm just a creeper but the word "Holy-ween" made me lol...it sounds a little dirty to me.

I can see it as a day to encourage reading.

We always dressed up for school. There were several kids who didn't but it was because they were conservative Christians who thought it celebrated evil. So to me, ironically, it seems as if the people who would be for removing halloween would also want to keep Christmas.

On the whole I don't think I will worry too much about what schools do. We eill celebrate how we want at home!

@Mamaof2: That doesn't sound like anything has changed to me. I went to elementary school in the 80s and we weren't allowed to dress up for school then either. Still sounds like they can be whatever they want for Halloween after school when they go trick-or-treating though.

Wow, that's not the case around here, kids are still allowed to pick whatever they want to be. However, I don't ever remember dressing up for school and I don't think my nieces did this year? they have had spirit week all week at school for homecoming, so they've done different themes, today is School Spirit Day since the game is tonight?

What do you mean the kids can't pick a costume? Who's determining that?! Do you mean at school? We didn't dress up for Halloween at school (we ran home and changed into our costumes right after school).
I'm a teacher and the kids at our school aren't allowed to wear costumes either. As a parent and a teacher I prefer that though. They are uncomfortable, distracting, and often inappropriate (think 5th grade girls as sexy lady bugs)

Everyone around here still calls it Halloween; I haven't heard anyone refer to it as "character day". I do agree that it is not as fun as it used to be, though! I was talking to the little boy I nanny about it yesterday, and he asked me what I dressed up as when I was a kid. He's being a character from a popular Disney movie this year (with an elaborate, expensive costume), and I was like, "uhhh, I was a witch once, and a ghost, and a devil, and a doctor.......". His response was :meh:

I was listening to talk radio this morning and they were talking about how awful Halloween is these days.

Several callers said its not allowed to be called Halloween and instead its "Character Day".

Several people also mentioned that they could not randomly pick a costume. One woman said the kids could be a pirate or a something else (cant remember). Another said that the kids had to be a character from a book that they read.

WTH? Talk about taking the fun out of Halloween.

Christmas cant be celebrated and now Halloween cant either?

Thoughts?
