@KT326: Yeah LO's pediatricians office has sign up saying they charge for forms but they never charged us even though we have had multiple forms filled out. To me it just a weird thing to charge for, although it make more sense for a pediatrician that has to always fill out school forms then the basic signature needed for the disability forms.

@Mrsbells: I had to pay my copay ($25) to have the STD forms filled out, which I also thought was ridiculous as all the OB needed to do was sign it. I also had to pay a $15 fee when I needed a form for preschool filled out but the pediatrician actually had to fill out a couple pages, that I didn't mind paying for.

As for general records, in my experience it just depends on the office. I had to pay to have Kaiser transfer records over to my old RE. Then I had to pay my old RE to transfer records to my OB and my new RE. But my new RE didn't charge me to transfer my records to my OB, it was actually in automatic process once I was pregnant.

@kiddosc: yeah me either, and I asked about it several times before I had my baby and they never mentioned it and told me to wait til after the baby was born to fill it out. Then they wouldnt fax or email me the form until my husband went there and paid in cash. I was really disappointed, it was just one or two pages and they charged me that much for it.
Sometimes I'm not sure if the doctor is aware of how her staff behave. For the longest time I tried to book a friday appointment because I had fridays off and the staff told me she didnt work fridays anymore. When I finally got an appointment I asked her how come she doesnt work fridays anymore and she told me she still works Mon-Fri. I did inform her that her staff told me otherwise.

My OB's office charges if I request them but not if another doctor requests them.

I can't believe they made you pay to fill out your STD form! I would go in and throw a huge fuss about getting the records pronto. At my last OBs office she just gave me a copy of my records to carry around with me in case I had to deliver at another hospital since we lived an hour away.

That's ridiculous. I switched Dr's mid pregnancy and wasn't charged to have my records sent to the new Dr.

I had to switch OB when we moved cross country and I got pregnant. I distinctly remember paying for the records to be sent to new OB. Then I had switch at 20 weeks with DS2 since we moved states again. I don't remember paying that time.

@Mrsbells: should only have to pay if you request them for you instead of the office requesting it from the other office. But... Any office can have their own policies

Thanks everyone for your responses. The new doctor is also requesting but they are still gonna charge me regardless. Hopefully it isn't a lot because in my last pregnancy i paid $25 for just my short term disability form to be filled out. :meh:

Both of my old practices charged to send my records to my new doctor. I think my new doctor's office initiated the process and one of them outsourced the transfer of records so I was billed by some random records company.

But when we switched pediatrician's for DS, I told them in the office before our last appointment and they actually printed all the records for me while we were with the doctor. So maybe you could try asking in the office but probably expect to pay for it.

I had to pay for copies of medical records when we moved. I think it was $50 a person.. So not cheap, but both hospitals charged.

i switched doctors in the middle of my second pregnancy (right around 20 weeks i believe) and had to pay for it. i think maybe it was like $20 or $30? once it was paid, they just faxed it over to the new doctor - it was pretty quick and painless.

I remember having charges to get DH's medical records from a hospital copied for an attorney. I've never been charged to transfer medical records from one practice to another. I think it's worth complaining about to see if they will waive the fee.

I used to help out in medical records in my mother's office. If you have your new doctor request the records, they most likely will send them to the new doctor for free. They don't have to, but I think it's *very* rare for a doctor to charge another doctor.

Most practices charge for individual requests because it does cost time & money to process the request, plus they don't want people requesting records for no "real" reason.

I agree it's frustrating, but hopefully you can avoid the fee this way!

In the past when I switched doctors, there was a charge if I requested my own medical records but it was free if my new doctor requested them. It's a dumb system, but if you know who you'll be using in your new area, I'd have them request the records instead. They'll probably get better service than you will.

If you switched OB did you have to pay for your records to be sent over?
My OB is great but her staff just have poor manners. I've stuck with her because I love her but now we are moving to a new state in the middle of my pregnancy and i need my records sent to the new state. They explained a long drawn out process of faxing the release form then waiting to hear back from then regarding how much it will cost then i have till mail a check once that clears they will send my records over i'm already 31+ weeks and will be moving by 35 weeks and i told them a long time ago about the move.
Anyway I am thinking of gong in to the office tomorrow and trying to get the whole thing expedited. I just feel annoyed with the whole thing.
