We love Charleston! We usually stay at Charleston Place, which is pricey, but it's a beautiful hotel in a great location off King Street. We love to walk around the city and take in all the architecture and the scenery along the battery. If you're interested in history, I recommend taking a walking tour, so you can learn the history behind all the beautiful buildings you'll see. We did one through a company called Free Tours by Foot, and they were great! It was free, but you can leave a tip at the end if you enjoyed it. We ate at FIG, which was delicious, but also hard to get a reservation for, so book early! I also really liked stopping by Magnolia Plantation for a short day trip. There is so much history and beauty! I'm sure you'll love it!

@SweetiePie: the dewberry is stunning!
Two of my siblings live in Charleston (my pleasant) so here are my suggestions. I've taken a horse and carriage tour a few times and i actually love it every time. It's touristy but i learn so much about the city and the history. My siblings who are locals also join me because they learn something too!
Eats - we had the most fantastic dinner at FIG. Poogan's porch was decent too and had a neat atmosphere. Magnolia and Husk are also on the top of our list when we're there. We love Toast for brunch/lunch and we also had some great seafood at Coast one time. We venture out to Sullivan's island for Home Team BBQ and Poes for a great burger.

@YogiBeachWife: We are doing the Dewberry! It's brand new and gorgeous, perfect location. I'd love some old Southern charm at a bnb but it's just not my husband's thing.

For something to do that's kind of different, I really loved the Angel Oak Tree on St. John's Island. It's not a far drive (maybe 20 minutes?). It's the oldest living live oak tree in the country, I think. The thing is MASSIVE; it's incredible.

I also recommend a ghost tour. There are tons of them. We did the prison tour and it was ok. Friends did the more traditional walk through the city and graveyards and said it was great.

Morgan Creek Grill out on Isle of Palms is right on the water. The food was delicious and the views were stunning!

One evening check out the rooftop bar at Vendue!

@SweetiePie: Did you narrowed down a hotel? We were going back and forth between the Mills House, The Vendue, and Kings Courtyard. There were a few boutique hotels that I was really interested in but they were completely booked the days we wanted to go or ridiculously expensive. We decided to go with the least expensive of the three, Kings Courtyard. I love how old the building is and the location is prime.

We really enjoyed doing a walking tour one day! We learned lots of cool things that you wouldn't otherwise find out just walking around on your own and we got to go in some neat old buildings too.

I will also add that we did this trip when I was 32 weeks pregnant with with a 2 year old which was tough, we would love to go back kids free. The last time I went there kids free we did a night time ghost walking tour which was awesome, I love the history and the cool little cobblestone alleys they take you down. Sea brook island is lovely to visit too.

We stayed in Patriots Bay right across the bay from Charleston so you had a view of the downtown from our resort. We loved it! It had its own pier, several nice pools to lounge at to overlook the bay and charleston but super close to downtown. The hotel offered free shuttles that dropped you off at market street all day and the river taxi also picked up at the pier and would take you to either battery park, or the aquarium area. It was nice being so close but still had the relaxing beach vibe when you were at the hotel.

I could spend a week in Charleston just for the food. If you love seafood, Coast is a must. Get something off the grilled menu--you won't regret it. Magnolia is great for classic southern food with an upscale twist. Blossom is owned by the same restaurant group and is a little more modern. Poogan's Porch is also on my don't-miss list. The biscuits are to die for. For breakfast, try Hominy Grill (also good for lunch or dinner, actually...) If you like Thai food, Basil is amazing. If you like coffee shops, Black Tap is the place to go. Some good non-coffee options if you'll be avoiding caffeine. Glazed Gourmet has awesome donuts. Dixie Supply has some awesome breakfast options, too.

Hyman's, Jestines, and Kaminsky's are all places that I see recommended a ton, but we're just so-so for me.

If you like to shop, the Market is really fun, and King Street has lots of options. We tend to only shop and eat when we go into Charleston... We stay on Kiawah Island and drive into town for a few great meals.

Also, disclaimer, I haven't visited any of these places in more than a year. We didn't make it into Charleston on our beach vacation this summer.

One of my road trip honeymoon stops was in Charleston! We really loved it. We stayed in an airbnb and it was a quick drive to everything we wanted to go to and was super cheap. I think it was in West Asheville. We basically stuffed our faces the whole time with delicious food ; ) We loved Sugar bakery, walking/ shopping/ eating along king street, and hiking in the national forest. We went in January so we avoided the beachy areas. We tried a few bbq places and our favorite was Home Team. The biscuit place on King street was really good too. The donut place was good but they weren't warm so that was major disappointment. I guess I'm spoiled with fresh warm donuts. Oh and bring quarters for parking.

Also we stayed at the Old Village Post House Inn when we went down for our elopement: honeymoon and it was super lovely! It is in Mount Pleasant which is a bit of a drive but the staff was totally amazing for us and it was the picture perfect Old South B&N decor I was looking for.

@Mrs. Pickle: second the ghost tour- the group leaders are totally insane but it's fun to discuss them over drinks after hahaha. I like Pearl's for happy hour, Taco Boy or Butcher and Bee for lunch, any Sean Brock restaurant for dinner! The sweet grass baskets and local artisan stuff at the city market are precious!

You should take some time to drive or walk around the Battery and look at the architecture. It's so distinct and pretty.

Park and walk around City Market. It doesn't take too long to get through all of it.

For high end shopping go to King Street.

I would go to High Cotton for one meal. Avoid 5Church. It has great reviews but it was so meh and the service was terrible. You have to be sure to try shrimp and grits somewhere!

Fort Sumter is a popular place to visit. I haven't been since I was a kid so I don't remember it very well.

ETA: I did a ghost tour once and it was so ridiculous, but also fun.

We stayed at the Mills House, which was lovely. Did a trolley tour of the city, visited Ft. Sumter and took some nighttime ghost tours (which were a lot of fun!) There are so many great restaurants in the city - the Peninsula is a good place for a little splurge. Have fun!

Ok, you guys gave me such AWESOME suggestions for New Orleans, I have to come back and ask the same for Charleston. For fun let's just assume no budget, anything goes. It's our 5 year anniversary so we'll be kid free 🙌🏼 And I'll be roughly 13-14 weeks pregnant.
It will be mid-September.

-What area should we stay in?
-Any specific hotel recommendations (while I'd love a B&B my husband isn't too into that idea)?
-Food suggestions? (I'm looking at you, @youboots)
-Must see attractions/tours?

We'll likely only be there 3 FULL days, plus the evening we arrive and morning we leave.
M-F.
