I agree. Maybe tackle one thing at a time. See if you could get him to poo on the toilet but wearing a diaper. If you can get that down you could almost fool him and cut a hole in the diaper and when he's thinking he's pooing in the diaper it will flop on the toilet.

Is it maybe a position thing? Does he sit or squat under the desk. When constipated my mom taught me that the best position to sit in to open things up is on a toilet with one leg crossed over the other. It's a bit odd to cross your legs to try to poo but it really does help open things up. I also highly recommend it for any pregnant ladies!

We've been using Jamie Glowacki's method. In the poop chapter she has some suggestions that may be helpful to you. Likely you've already tried some of it but do you take Charlie to the bathroom with you to demonstrate to help dispel some of his fear? Have you done a playdoh demonstration? She's also got a really great forum of past questions and topics that I've found very helpful to refer to. http://www.jamieglowacki.com or http://www.ohcrappottytraining.com/forum/

The only thing that worked for us to let him run around bare. He had one accident on one of our rugs and was terrified. Shortly after, he started pooping in the toilet. My 1 year old is afraid to poop because of constipation issues too. Hope we won't have any potty training issues with her later on. I'm still trying to get her comfortable with just pooping in general.

We are in the same position although they just poop in their underwear. Ugh it's do gross. We are at a loss. My oldest had major constipation issues too so he just hates pooping. The others seem to just get distracted. It is getting pretty annoying.

DS does the same thing except he goes and hides under his blanket. He will be 4 in November. In the past we have tried many things to get him to use the potty with no success. I'm approaching it a little different now. When he wants to poop I let him still use the pull up and the blanket but he has to be in the bathroom. Soon I would like to get him to sit on the toilet with pull up on and blanket to poop. After he masters that maybe move on to no blanket and eventually no pull up.

@StrawberryBee: alas that didn't work when we tried it!

I may try wagon's idea to say we're out of diapers. I've done it before, but caved when he panicked and begged harder!

Okay, I have no experience whatsoever, but what if you got one of those portable kids potties, put it under the desk where he runs to poop in the diaper, and ask him to go in that instead? If its a comfort thing then he still has the privacy he's after, and you can slowly work your way towards the bathroom.

@mrbee: ah, yes that's right... well with memories like that it's gotta be tough :( He probably wants to feel safe and hidden away while he poops just in case it hurts again. Sitting on a toilet in the middle of the bathroom doesn't exactly scream comfort :(

@mrs. wagon: Something is going on in that head of his where he only wants to poop in his diaper... I think it's b/c he used to have constipation and it hurt to poop.

We've addressed a lot of his constipation, but he seems to still have that memory of painful poops!

oh man! I babysat for a little boy who was completely potty trained but had to poop in a pull-up. He was at least 4 or 5 years old!

Could you make a big deal of completely getting rid of all his diapers? Wagon Jr. didn't insist on a diaper for poos, but he did ask for it once when we said "poop in the potty" he said "poop in the diapey" and we immediately said "no, no more diapers! We don't have any diapers, just underpants.

The tradeoff is that we do have accidents sometimes. :(

Charlie wears underwear all day long, except for when he has to go number two. Then he runs up to me and begs for a diaper! Once it is on, he will go hide under a desk and poop... then afterward he will find me, and I will flush it for him and wash his booty.

Gosh, the boy just doesn't like to poop anywhere but in his diaper! He never ever has an accident, but I wish he would go in the potty instead of using up diapers.

Does anyone have a miracle cure that can help us finish Charlie's potty training?
