Maybe he was sick or starting to get sick? My son caught a cold this week and the daycare lady said it's been going around. When my son is really sick though, he's CRAZY. Like a totally different kid! He's usually very sweet, smiley and affectionate. But when's he's sick, he just whines and tantrums all day long over EVERYTHING and he gets so picky. He'll get mad if I give him a straight straw vs a bendy straw.
