@Littlebit7: you're right, a lot of cities and people have a lot more they need to do to address their histories. Not just southern cities, Philadelphia firebombed a black neighborhood just in the 1980s. I haven't found Richmond to be more racist than Charlottesville, though less affluent.

Unfortunately the focus is on Charlottesville right now. They decided to let the new HBO show Confederate film there and barely decried the first KKK rally that was held there earlier in the summer. In a small city there's thousands of members of white supremacist groups and the organizer of the rally is from Charlottesville.

I get it, most people mean well, but nows the time to confront that implicit racism that's built into a lot of cities because of their recent pasts.

@ShootingStar: Yeah, I just don't understand why they would come here specifically. We don't have the same kind of history as Charlottesville (this area has its own kind of racist history but it's not like there is a statue for that).

@catlady: They're probably looking for a fight by coming to Boston. It garners more attention at a national level.

As far as I'm concerned these people are the scum of the earth.

I am so unsettled by this type of thing starting to happen in the U.S. There are apparently TWO of these rallies coming to my city next weekend. One of them is supposed to march to a spot within a few blocks of my home. I live in one of the most liberal cities in the whole country. I can't believe they feel emboldened enough to show their faces here. It saddens, sickens, and worries me. I'm hoping our local government puts a stop to it before it starts, although of course that will probably just stoke the fire (since technically they are calling them "Free Speech" rallies).

Someone posted a photo of a shirt seen at the rally that said something along the lines of "Obama called me a clinger. Hillary called me deplorable. Trump calls me American." You need no more proof than that to know that these people feel emboldened by Trump. I'm absolutely horrified that he didn't condone or even acknowledge the fact that these people were changing NAZI slogans. And then only when there was a huge backlash by his own party, did the White House (NOT the president) walk back that statement to "of course include..." Trump doesn't care. He doesn't. I picture him sitting in his gilded room in his golf club, pumping his fist, and going "YES! Make America Great Again!" Ugh, I'm so disgusted.

@lamariniere: That Slate article if fantastic!

I'm horrified by what happened in Charlottesville, but I'm not at all surprised by Trump's pathetic statements. Of course he's not going to call out white supremacists, neo-Nazis, or the KKK. They are part of his base! And given his low approval ratings, he needs them. So sad!

@Corduroy: ah thanks but I'll admit my ties to cville and my family being there are rather insignificant to the more broad issue.
@Maysprout: true, but most of that could be said about the entire south. At least some cities are stepping up and trying to rid themselves of some of the glitter. Charlottesville proper is progressive and does embrace diversity. Is it as diverse and accepting, as, say, NYC? No it's not. But they are trying. And just 25 miles outside of Charlottesville is an entirely different mindset. Richmond, for example, doesn't even have glitter. And it's probably more diverse than Charlottesville. .
@lamariniere: yeah that is scary, right? as in they have zero shame. Zero second thoughts as they publicly identify themselves as white supremacist neo-nazis. Scary.

Charlottesville is the latest example of just how significant the Civil Rights movement was. Discrimination and racial violence became illegal, but hearts and minds did not evolve. Coming to grips that your country is just as messed up as the rest of the world is absolutely frightening.

@Littlebit7: this is a great read. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2017/08/dahlia_lithwick_on_the_nazis_in_charlottesville.html

ETA: what was most shocking to me is that these people feel emboldened enough by the political climate to walk around and profess their hate with their faces uncovered. I feel so ashamed.

I wish Trump condemned the acts but I'm also not surprised. This is what I expect from Trump. Threats of nuclear war via Twitter and white supremacists re-tweeting Trump's statement as a condoning their actions.

Is America great again yet?

So sad. It does seem like most people travelled from other states. That said Charlottesville has a racist history that often is covered up in glitter instead of being addressed. I love visiting Charlottesville, it's gorgeous, but it's still got lots of issues to address.
Here's a post from a black farmer in the area about his experience.

This has been on my mind too. Thanks for starting this thread. I agree, it's so upsetting this is the world we're living in. There is so, so, so much hate. It scares me.

I am saddened and sickened by the country we live in. I'm scared for my children and the world they are growing up in.

I lived in Charlottesville several years and my family lives there now. The helicopter crashed 100 yards from my SILs house. Cville is a progressive, inclusive, and caring town. Not at all representative of the hatred and bigotry taking place there now.

My heart hurts for those injured and killed

I wish trump would have taken a concrete stand and condemned the acts of the white supremacists and neo-nazis...but instead he offered a neutral and diluted message. Now is not the time for neutrality or silence. That equates to acceptance and tolerance. But I'm sadly not surprised.

I'm really at a loss that this is the reality we wake up to on a far-too regular basis.
I'm rambling...but ...ugh.
