Along the same lines as @twodoghouse:, our kids learn Red Light/Green Light at daycare, and we just go with that. So if D is running off, we just say "Red Light!" and he stops on a dime. Once we catch up, if it's an ok space for him to go running off again, we say "Green Light" and let him go. Otherwise, we just explain that he needs to stay close to Mommy/Daddy/the cart/whatever

My daughter kept doing that for awhile but it was usually down our driveway. It drives me crazy! We finally started taking her inside immediately and being done outside or putting her in her car seat and not giving her the privilege of climbing in herself or helping to buckle and stopped pretty fast. Leaving when she runs would definitely suck for you but I bet you'd only need to do it a couple of times before she made the leap. I wish I had a better idea though.

@Mrs. Goose: This is what we do! We play chase in the house in a big circle around the kitchen and living room. When my son wants to chase we agree on how many laps we're going to do, and then count them off. It helps to keep it controlled. One thing that helps is that we learned to freeze from gymnastics class. It was taught on the first day, and when the teacher calls freeze, all the kids stop and put their hands up in a "stop" pose, sort of? So I will say "freeze!" if own of my 2 year olds start to stray or wander off. It works wonders. They immediately stop in that pose and look at me for further instructions.

Totally age appropriate, but I understand how scary/frustrating it can be. I honestly think you're doing everything right.

I bought a wrist strap on Amazon last year (because my kid is a runner), but all of my friends shamed me into not using it! ;)

Have a set time/place where the chase me game can occur?

And if she got far away from you and you weren't chasing her (in a safe-ish indoor space like a jumping play place) would she stop and look for you or wait for you?

DD is 26 months and a few times lately has taken off on me or DH and says "chase me Chase me!"
We don't ever "chase" her for fun so I am not sure where she got this wonderful idea.....lol....but with a 4 month old I don't want this to turn into a habit as catching her isn't always a fast option!
I don't want this behavior to escalate or continue!
Things I have done:
Explain to her she isn't safe if she runs off
Tell her I will not chase you here
Have her hold my hand of the stroller

I could potentially just lock her in a double stroller or cart but she has been so good and I don't always have that BUS of a stroller with me and sometimes we are at a place where it is appropriate for her to be walking (Jump house place, beach..etc)

TIA
