I thought there were quarantine rules with bringing food into Hawaii?

My son used to go between homemade purees and pouches with no problem.

@shopaholic: It's easy to ship frozen food with a checked in luggage. I put it in a ziplock bag, then in a soft insulated cooler bag with ice packs inside it. We do it all the time. One of my aunts makes the best hot pepper chili oil that everyone requests so we freeze it in a plastic container and ship it this way when we travel. Not sure if traveling to Hawaii would be any different.

@chopsuey: @swurlygurl: @sunny: @shinymama: Thanks ladies. It makes sense to buy pouches. I just have an overflowing freezer anyway. I was also told by another mom that once you start pouches, they'll refuse homemade purees. I will try to stick to things I can just mash up, like avocado and bananas. :)

We were in Hawaii this summer, and I packed some stuff {carry-on and checked} and purchased the rest there. With the exception of produce and bottled water, I didn't find the prices to be that different from California.

Ditto @sunny: I had a banana in my diaper bag, and had to throw it out.

Oh just thought of something! Hawaii has its own agricultural inspections kinda like another country. Make sure you check that any fresh items you bring are allowed, otherwise they will make you throw them out!

I haven't but my friend's mom always packs a ton of frozen food when she comes to visit WA from CA. I think she just packs enough plus ice packs so that it stays frozen on the way here. It's only a 2 hr flight vs 5 hr though!

What about bringing a selection of pouches and also buying some fruits and veggies there? Avocado and banana are great options!

Are you going to have a fridge/freezer in your room? If so, I probably would, because if you bring it out with you half frozen it will stay cool enough/be the right temp by the time you want to use it. Otherwise, too much work :/

I haven't! I would think taking pouches would be a lot more convenient since you don't have to worry about refrigeration while you're out.
I plan on packing pouches for our trip to the bahamas.

edit: My mom always checks frozen dumplings, kimchee and other random food items when she flies in to visit! She brings some in her carry on and in checked bags. The stuff stays frozen as long as you put ice packs in with them!

Has anyone ever checked frozen (baby) food in their luggage? I've found you can check frozen foods in its own cooler as a separate piece of luggage. Or you can bring a "Reasonable amount" of baby food in your carry-on. I'd like to feed K as much homemade food as possible during our week-long trip to Hawaii. I'd buy stuff there, but food is notoriously expensive. And I already have bags and bags of stuff at home.

* Obviously, if it's too difficult, I'm not going to be stubborn about it. I'll buy pouches or fruits while we're there.
