I decided to use one of those car seat transporters where I can strap the car seat in and the kids can ride in it while we pull them around the airport. It works as a stroller through the airport since we have to bring the car seats anyway. As for the umbrella strollers, we'll have them checked with our bags. Oh, I do have a car seat bag that I'll bring so the car seat that will be gate checked will be protected.

I'm getting a Brica Roll & go and the Go Go Babyz one from craigslist. Was going to just buy them new but no one has them in stock. Luckily, I found two people who are selling them on craigslist. Woohoo! Saved money off of retail.

I think at least putting it in a bag is a smart choice because you don't want any of the straps or LATCH connectors to be compromised.

We've used both a heavy duty canvas bag & the Bebishi Ultra Durable Child Car Seat Storage Bag With Shoulder Strap For Travel And Airport Gate Check. Worked great--though we've only gate checked our seat. We have a backpack diaper bag, too, as well as a backpack-style travel crib, so we look like pack mules loaded down with all these kid things (and kid) strapped to us, but it works!

@Meow: oh, good to know! Thanks!

I still want one layer of protection for my car seats. It could be accidentally dropped on the ground and that could have a number of things that I wouldn't want my babies near.

@bluestriped bee: just wanted to let you know fuelers and rampers are usu not even employed by the same company and their jobs are not interchangeable so that shouldn't be a cause of concern. Unless you're flying a private jet into the non-commercial part of airports, then you might have the same personnel handling both but not the case for 99% of us po folks!

We just have a travel car seat. I figure it's cheaper/safer than relying on one from a rental car company.

@MamaCate: yeah, I wouldn't check anything naked. I'm not a germaphobe but I do want my car seat to be protected from rain or anything gross from the airport conveyor belt. Also, not sure if the same people that put fuel into the plane are the same ones handling my car seat. I don't expect my car seat and luggage to be handled with gloves but just one layer of protection.

@MamaCate: I totally get that! It's just your travel seat and I think for the most part they are respectful of luggage and especially kids safety stuff. Anddddd after the last time we flew and brought the seat on the plane my husband said he won't fly with me anymore if I try to do that again

@bluestriped bee: @charlotte: we did the "naked" travel seat! We bought a cheap seat for a trip with just me and LO. So I attached it to our big wheeled bag with a bungee cord and checked it as is. It was fine both ends of the round trip. Maybe it was not the safest option but it was the only sane thing for me.

We have travel seats so I don't freak out about replacing them if they're damaged by checking.

I just got off of a flight and there was a "naked" Cosco seat circling the baggage belt!!! No bag no box, just a seat!! Surprisingly it looked perfect!! I probably wouldn't do THAT but I think the bags some have suggested are great and we have had good luck with gentle handling of our gate-checked bags.

My Scenera (from Wal-Mart, but bought at a B&M store, not online) did not come with a manufacturer's box. Just a zippered plastic dust bag. So like @Cole said, don't be surprised if you don't get one either.

@bluestriped bee: Yeah, I get it the free extra seat is great, but if it means dragging a box through the airport, it's not worth it to me. I don't have twins, but two kids and if I had to drag a box behind me with them, I'd lose my mind. :) So if you are willing to give up the box and get a bag that you can transport the seat in, I'm for that.

We also don't travel enough for me to purchase separate carseats, so we travel with our Britax. I'd definitely get a wheeled bag if possible.

As a matter of fact, @birdofafeather: what bag do you use? I can see that being a worthwhile investment.

@T.H.O.U.: Yeah, I agree. If I could bet money on it, I will probably not take boxes, because I will have to tote those empty boxes everywhere! Haha ;) I'm just wondering if there is anyone who actually had this issue. I don't think this is a twin problem... I think this could apply to someone who has only one baby (lap infant). I want to know if there is anyone who actually stuck with their plan on keeping the car seat safe at all costs.

Honestly I think at some point you have to look at practicality. You're traveling with twins. Traveling with a box is not practical.

Just be smart about it, check the seat for any damage and go from there.

@MamaG: It would make life so much easier to have that extra free seat. Stress level from the first flight to the return flight was a huge difference. I was so relaxed on the return flight. The first flight was before Christmas so the stress from holiday travel already made things worse.

@Cole: I bought one but it's still in the shipping box so I honestly don't know if there is another box inside. It was a Walmart deal for $30.

I'm with you. We took both infant car seats when we traveled for Christmas. No boxes. One was gate check (and put in a car seat bag) for one flight and both seats were used on the flight on the return flight. I checked it out for damage and I'm still using the car seats now.

Yup, I am guilty of plopping our carseat into a bag and handing it over at the baggage check point and picking it up again at the baggage carousel. There are certain risks that I'm willing to take, and this is one of them.

If I was determined to be "safe", I'd probably put it in the box and check it (not at the gate) and not worry about getting the extra seat free.

i tossed our car seat box long before i ever traveled with DD1. we just got a rolling bag for the seat to keep it from getting dirty and called it good. bringing the box sounds like a headache that i wouldn't want to deal with traveling with kids.

Have you bought the scenera yet? Mine didn't come in a box, just a plastic box. It is easy to travel with though. I think I'd simply elect to check the box though if you have one, maybe you could stuff it with one or two trash bags filled with air and tied to help keep the shape?

I admit though, we plopped ours in a car seat bag and sent it through and crossed our fingers. We inspected it upon arrival for obvious issues and would have rented or bought a new one had there been an issue.

So my local FB group, always lights up, whenever people talk about checking car seats (to do or not to do) on planes. Of course, it leads to people arguing over why there should not be lap infants because it not safe... yeah, I think you do what you have to do (no judgement here)...

So I know Car seat experts (CPST) say the best way to travel with car seats is to check it in the manufacturers' box.

I'm going to try to do this but in our case we have twins. We bought a seat for one twin and the other will be a lap infant. So I know I can bring one car seat directly on the plane. But the second car seat will be placed in the box and checked (gate checked or baggage check).

My question is what happens if I don't know whether or not I will get a free extra seat for the second twin. (Most likely will happen if the flight is not full. Won't happen for the flight before 4th of July, but return flight might be emptier.) Do I bring the second car seat (in the box) to the gate and take it out if I can get a extra seat? If I do get the extra seat, do I just send an empty box to be gate checked? Seems a bit weird. Do I bring tape so I can seal up the box?

Has anyone done this?

Yes, this is the recommended way to travel with a car seat per car seats experts. If things get difficult, I may just bring both car seats without the box or just bring one in the box.

Yeah, these are all things I should do.

Oh, I will be traveling with cheaper convertible car seats (Cosco Scenera worth $40-$50). A few months ago, I would have taken my Diono car seats but my sister recently went to PR and her car seat was lost! She never got it back. Yeah, I'm not sending a $200 car seat to be possibly damaged and/or lost.
