When we have checked it, it has always been at the counter. Some airlines give bags and some don't. The last time we flew United, they gave us a bag for both of our seats.

i have checked it in at the ticket counter. virgin america has big plastic bags for car seats. i didn't want to lug it through the airport, and i didn't want to buy a bag.

I've done both, and I vastly prefer checking it at the counter, assuming it is free. I always use a bag, because I am paranoid about straps getting caught and it allows me to put a big sticker on it with our last name (I feel like it's less likely to "walk off" that way. It's going to get tossed around, there's no way to try to tell a baggage handler to be careful with your seat.

This may sound silly, but I am wondering what is the most convenient. We are flying next week and DS (5.5 months) with be a lap baby. We are gate checking his stroller and are thinking of checking in his car seat with our luggage. Is this better than also gate checking his car seat? considering he will be a lap passenger.
Lastly, is it necessary to buy a car seat cover? I was thinking of just tossing it in a garbage bag and calling it a day.
