I think the only way to know it's a chemical is to have a positive test first. My cycles have always been a little wonky and heavy, and my chemicals were pretty much exactly the same as regular cycles.

All of my chemicals, I've had positive home pregnancy tests that get progressively lighter, then turn negative, then I get a heavy, long period. My periods are typically 5 days and not that heavy, but with the chemicals they are a week or more (once, up to 2 weeks). Unless you have a positive pregnancy test, I don't think it's a chemical pregnancy. Although it sucks, I think lots of women have heavy, cloth, irregular periods.

I think the only way to know is charting... I have irregular periods, but with temping and charting I know when I ovulate, and I know my LP is 12 days. I had a CP in October, and I was 3 days late. I tested on 10days past ovulation with a negative, and then went away for a few days, late period, convinced I was pregnant and didn't get a chance to test until 15dpo. I had a very faint positive, which worried me. I started spotting that night.

My period was heavier and cramps were pretty bad, but nothing too extreme to differentiate had I not been charting/known.

My chemical at 5 weeks was slightly heavier and lasted a few more days than my regular period (which is a bit heavy and long regularly).

Oh and I had positives one morning and then had a blood test that registered me as a 7 for hcg, and I still had positives all day that day. So if anything over 5 is pregnant, the tests I used - frers, are pretty sensitive. So if you can't get a positive on a sensitive HPT, the chances you're having a CP is pretty slim.

I've had 2 Cps and both registered positive for a short time on HPTs. If you don't get a positive, I don't think it's a CP.

I have always had pretty irregular periods. I had one confirmed chemical that was definitely heavier and weirder than my normal periods. I am pretty sure I had one other early loss, but no way to confirm that, other than comparing the symptoms with my normal periods and with the chemical I know I had.

Any chance you are charting your cycle or taking OPKs? That would be the easiest way to nail down when you should be testing, which would help you confirm if you are having (detectable) chemical pregnancies.

It is possible, but unlikely, that you are having recurring chemical pregnancies. That said, if you suspect you are having some kind of issue I would actively* try for a while. If after 6 months nothing has happened and you are still concerned, you could talk to your doctor (lie and say it's been a year or they may not take you seriously). Good luck!

*actively meaning charting and/or OPKs

Is something going on that's unusual for you? What's happening that's making you think you're having reoccurring chemicals as opposed to just not getting pregnant?

If you suspect it's a chemical I suggest going to the Dr for a blood test, that's the only way to be sure.
You could try a HPT, but you'd have to test early.

I suspected that this was what was happening to me, but I didn't get confirmation until after documented 2 m/cs and a lot of blood tests. HPTs can detect a tiny tiny amount of HcG (I got a :bfp: at 13), so it is quite rare. If you've been trying for at least a year without any luck, I think it would be worth bringing up to a doctor, but most won't take you seriously unfortunately. I had good luck seeing a naturopath who looked more in-depth into my history.

I don't think there is anyway to know for sure without a positive hpt. I have had 1 chemical and I think it almost seemed like it was a different period at the time but I think I was just hyperaware. Mine lasted pretty much the same amount of time.

I've read that chemical pregnancies are hard to detect unless you've tested positive and then negative after (and then seeing a doc to confirm). Compared to a regular period, your chemical period would be like a regular period, possibly with heavier flow, more PMS symptoms like cramping, and more tissue/clots passed.

The only bit of information I couldn't find is if a chemical period would last longer or shorter than your regular period?

My periods are irregular, always heavy with clots, full blown PMS. I don't need to go back and see if I've had chemicals' but moving forward, it would help to know how to distinguish the two. If I am having re-occuring chemical pregnancies, I'd like to be able to tell my physician.

Does anyone have insight into this? Thanks in advance!
