@Mrs. Superhero: hahahha! Awesome! That is very reassuring. How long have they had it so far? Also, not sure if it would even be available here, but would you happen to know what the brand name is?

Btw that is REALLY cold! Oh my lanta. It might get to -25, maybe -30 (but not likely) and I thought that was FREEZING!! what are your typical winters like?

@Coco Bee: It worked fine, and my parents have always had a freezer on their porch. Covered, but outside. It gets down to -40 (but not often) which is....oh, it's -40 in farenheit too, duh.

@Jennimac: yeah I wish that was an option. MAJOR disadvantage to where we are moving is that there is now no garage. Winter this year will S-U-C-K.

@Mrs. Superhero: oh so it worked outside? How cold does it get where you are?

OMG that's crazy about the bear. Well I'm not worried about anyone or anything getting into it, our apt/balcony is on the second floor.

We've had freezers on the porch before. Once a bear knocked my small chest freezer over and stole some meat. Like, I was standing on the other side of the glass patio doors and scared him off.

Life in the mountains. I had to move it inside and am soooo happy to now have a basement!

I now have a small chest freezer for meat and a 6 ft for meals and frozen summer fruit for smoothies. I can't survive without a freezer!

I don't think it would be a good idea to keep it outdoors. I store all my frozen milk in my MIL's deep freezer that she keeps in her garage. I want a chest freezer too! :-)

@mrs. wagon: yeah we have been putting it off for lack of space... but now that I think back to our past two apartments, we so could have made it worth both times!!! So now, moving into a place smaller than any we've lived so far - I am determined to make it work! We probably won't ever live anywhere smaller and that's what held us back!

I love the idea of being able to make tons of freezer meals. Like this weekend I picked up a huge bushel of green peppers at the farmers market, and blanched them today. I would love to do that with veggies from the farmers market and stock up for the winter- but no room! Also want to increase my milk stash... but no room!! Aghh. I need it! lol

@mrs. wagon: our new apartment is a good 500 sq ft smaller than this place... but getting a chest freezer is so important to me! There really is next to no storage space... I may just have to deal with having it in our bedroom closet!

Not really sure but ours is in our upstairs hallway, next to our mini fridge. Our hall is wide so there's plenty of space. Is that an option?

@Sweet T: yes, there is one but I don't think it's big enough to hold a chest freezer unless we got a really tiny one. I will have to look tomorrow (move-in day!)

I've seen people do it and they don't seem to have any issues. Do you have a storage closet? We've lived in two different apartments and both had storage closets off of the balcony/patio.

ETA: I would also think about whether or not you're going to want to go out in the snow to dig around in a freezer.

@bluestriped bee: other than our walk in closet, no. We don't get a garage with the apartment (it's an apt building). Even if we did pay the extra $$ for the garage, it's just a parking spot in the community underground parking, not an individual stall.

I don't know if it would be a good idea on a balcony where it could be rained on but I have seen freezers in a garage. Do you have somewhere indoors to be protected from the elements?

We want to get a chest freezer so we can stock up on food; particularly buy half a cow for the year! It would be so much cheaper... actually we NEED to get one because we joined a CSA and will be receiving LARGE quantities of food.

So the apartment we're moving to has a nice little balcony that is covered - but not like a three season porch, it just has a roof.

We are considering putting it out there, but we get freezing winters, like icy and -20 temps.

Does anyone know if we could keep the freezer out there? If not I think we might have space in the walk in closet, but that would definitely infringe on valuable storage space!
