That was what I was wondering too, if she's got teeth coming in. We've been battling canines for a while, and C always has his pointer finger in his mouth when they are bugging him.

I wonder if there is something you could put on her fingers to make them taste bad, but I'd be worried about getting it in her eyes.

My LO is a thumb-sucker...has been since she was in my belly. The minute we swaddle weaned she had her thumb in her mouth. She only sucks her thumb at bedtime and when she's in her carseat. There have been phases though (I think teething related) when I can tell it's more aggressive chewing bc the skin around her thumb is red and chewed up looking...this hasn't happened in a long time. She's almost 22 months and her 2 year molars are coming in and she has her pointer finger in her mouth a lot and is chewing away. Do you think it's teething related also? If so I would just try to distract her a much as possible or give her something else to chew on (small ice chips or frozen grape halves) to get some relief.

I know kids will chew on their finger, but I'm wondering if this is becoming a problem.

DD is a very "oral" kid. She has always needed to chew or suck on something to soothe herself (she would also rather eat crayons and chalk than play with it). If she doesn't have a paci or her blanket, she will have her fingers in her mouth. What concerns me is that she is chewing on her fingers, sometimes to the point of breaking the skin. It doesn't seem to hurt her, but it looks awful and she won't stop. I'm worried about infection, but I can't put a band aid on it otherwise she'll try to eat it.

Is there something I need to be doing to keep her from chewing on her fingers? Or is this just a phase like thumb-sucking?
