My bloodwork showed I wasn't immune, even though I had chicken pox, so prior to conceiving I got the vaccine.

Then while pregnant with my second I got shingles.

My blood work showed I wasn't immune to rubella so I just got an MMR booster before leaving the hospital. I didn't do anything different, but rubella I suppose is less common.

My husband has shingles right before our newborn was born and something useful we learned - shingles is really not that contagious. While you could get chicken pox from someone who has shingles, you have to have contact with the rash while it's weeping or open. So in the end, it was not that big a deal for us, even with a new baby.

I'm currently pregnant and not immune. My doctor just wanted me to know so I could avoid people with chicken pox and shingles. I'm not too worried because my LO isn't in daycare and I'm not around elementary aged kids.

I've just let my family with small kids know so they know to tell me if their kids get chicken pox.

I also was told I wasn't immune after I was tested during pregnancy - and I've had both chicken pox AND shingles in my life. Jeez. Anyway, my doctor kind of just said it was weird and didn't tell me to take any special precautions as far as I can remember.

@mrsbrewer: my understanding is that chicken pox and shingles are caused by the same virus. Once you've had chicken pox, catching the virus again can give you shingles but you won't get chicken pox again. And if you haven't had chicken pox, you can get that from someone who has shingles.

I found out when I was pregnant with my first that I wasn't immune to measles. My OB wasn't concerned at all. They gave me the booster after I delivered but when I got pregnant with my second, I still wasn't immune. He basically said some people just don't respond to certain vaccines and no need to take any extra precautions.

I've had chicken pox but am not immune. I was a nanny with my first pregnancy so I just altered my family and we kept an eye out for any weird rashes. Everything was fine.

@MrsSCB: Well geez that's confusing! Good to know though.

The nurse just called back and said that they will give me the booster in the hospital after I deliver. But not to change everyday activities, just to avoid anyone who actively has chickenpox or shingles.

@MrsBrewer: You won't get shingles, but you can get chicken pox from someone who has shingles if you have not yet had the chicken pox :-/

@ninja: See I have no clue how that works, since I never had the chickenpox, I thought shingles was something I never had to worry about?

@catlady: Those are kind of my thoughts, that most kids now are vaccinated (hopefully!) My only concern I've thought about though, is that I volunteer in nursery at our church in the toddler room. So I'm exposed to a million kids! hahaha But then again, I have a toddler myself, and I'm not going to stop taking her to the library, museums, etc just because of exposure....hmm..

I had this. It was weird because I actually had chickenpox as a child (with a couple scars to prove it) but they said my immunity just wasn't enough. I actually didn't find out until I was pregnant with #2. Not sure if they didn't test the first time around or if my results had somehow changed. I ended up losing that pregnancy and I didn't get the vaccine at that point because I wanted to try to get pregnant again quickly and apparently you need to wait several months after the vaccine to TTC. So I knew going into my next pregnancy that this was an issue for me. Honestly, it was fine as I never encountered anyone with chickenpox while I was pregnant either time, and most kids are vaccinated these days. They did end up giving me the vaccine literally right after I delivered LO2 in the hospital though.

This happened to me with my second as well. (I don't recall them testing that with my first). I didn't really take any extra precautions, because chickenpox is so rare where I live. I would just stay away from anyone with that or shingles when it is contagious.

So I just got back my 1st trimmest blood tests, (late because they forgot to put the order in!) but….I found out that I’m not immune to chickenpox! It’s weird, because when I was tested when I was pregnant with DD1, I was. I never got the chickenpox when I was a kid, but I had the vaccine.

From what I’ve read, it looks like you can’t get the vaccine booster while pregnant….I’m wait on my midwife to call me back and discuss.

In the mean time has anyone else had this happen? Were you extra cautious?
