Our nanny is a family friend and I've known her for years so I didn't pull her record. One of my husbands old coworkers was one of the last families she worked for and they have nothing but good things to say about her.

I know she has insurance, but I have also considered buying a gas getter for us and insuring her on it for her to use instead of her big 4 door pickup, especially if we have another kid.

We specifically hired the woman we hired because she is the only one we trust to drive our children. She is 40 and in my opinion just more mature than our options of college students.

She has insurance and our children would be covered in the event of an accident.

I’d be wary of liability and go over their or your coverage with a fine toothed comb. You are employing them but they are acting as a contractor. Would their insurance cover your kids in an accident (are you in a state where auto insurance covers medical?) If they are driving your car who is liable? You likely are. My SILs au pair (who was awful) went to her next family and hit someone in a parking garage while driving. The family is now being sued. This makes me sound paranoid and I swear I’m not but I work in the medical field and see soooo many lawsuits (both legit and money seeking) so it makes me a little nutty.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we hired a college girl to drive our toddler home from daycare (1 mile /5-minute drive on quiet local streets, speed limit or 25 or 30) using our car, just for this summer until I go on mat leave in August. I checked her references--3 other local moms, two of whom had hired her to drive their kids to lessons and from school, and all of them sang her praises in being responsible, reliable, and having good character. because of that and how limited the scope is, I didn't pull her driving record. I don't know how to safeguard against texting, but when I interviewed her I asked her about phone use and she went on a vehement rant (like, a healthy one) about how she hated phone addicts and didn't partake in that while babysitting, so, I feel comfortable with her. I think if I was hiring someone to drive my kid around a major city or if I thought they'd go on freeways, I would have pulled their record.

@oldschooolmama: thanks, cool to see it’s written in black & white for you. One of my kids daycare directors is looking for a HS or college student to shuttle her kids to a few activities in the morning. Driving is such a huge responsibility and I just wonder how much research/ oversight parents do.

No one has ever checked my driving record but I wouldn’t have an issue with it as I’ve never been in an accident or gotten a ticket.

My contract outlines that I have full coverage, maintance is done, parents must provide an appropriate car seat, and they must provide gas and mileage reemburstment. Oh and I have a little thing that says no texting while driving. I think it says hands free for phon calls but I honestly don’t use my phone if kids are in car.

Just curious for those if you with nannies and babysitters that drive your children... do you require them to carry car insurance, run a MVR and CLUE report to check their driving and accident history, and do you have any safeguards for texting and driving?
