Even though you can hear a crying baby or child from a long distance away, no one can deny that's better than sitting next to it or directly in front of it. I'm pretty cheap so I probably still wouldn't pay for it though. And I like babies-- I'd prefer them not scream near me but I think I have a higher tolerance than most!

I don't think I would pay extra. I welcome when babies cry, it creates a diversion and masks the sobs coming from my mouth!

I think it's a great idea! I kind of laugh a bit though because it doesn't matter how many rows away you are, if a baby is having a meltdown, you're going to hear it regardless of where you are seated. But hey, if it means that the super intolerant people are seated away from me and my child, I'm ok with that because you know what, DD is a baby and she's going to make noise sometimes.

I thi k its a wonderful idea. When C and I flew back to the UK last month, we had a very crabby man in the row in front of us. She was an ANGEL on that flight. She fell asleep an hour in and didnt make a peep the whole time and he was still turning around every few minutes to glare at me.

Great idea! (if it works lol) I'd much prefer to be seated around other families than by people who would give me the stink-eye every time the kid spoke or something. That being said, you can hear a baby scream allllll the way up the plane, so really, you'd just be avoiding the kicking seat phenomena... which still happens with adults behind you ;)

I always thought it'd be a good idea for airlines to have a family section. I'd pay extra for that. Though, I feel that Asia has a better tolerance for kids in general.

@MungBean: HA! Agree.

I do think it's a win-win. I don't want those haters (I say that teasingly... lol. I'm not a fan of noisy kids when I'm going somewhere childless) near my baby. I do know people who would pay the extra as well!

Definitely a win-win. I hate sitting next to babies and toddlers. If they're at the other end of plane, it's one thing, but in my row or in front of/behind me?...ugh. They cry and whine and make soooo much noise. And once the tantrum starts, it's hard to stop.

I always bring industrial earplugs on airplanes, which definitely helps. Between that and the white noise of sitting over the wing, I can at least avoid the worst of it.

Good idea in theory and yeah, screaming babies and kicking toddlers on planes suck, but rude, obnoxious, stinky, annoying, inconsiderate adults suck even worse. Wonder if there's a way we can create a zone for them... I know I'd gladly pay extra to stay away from them.

I think its ironic that they are banning under 12s from that section because I find that teenagers from 12-16 are usually the loudest on planes.

@Anagram: That sounds horrible! I mean, I really hope that's an exception to the rule. That's that kind of thing where if they airline did anything else, all of a sudden there would be an uproar over how airlines are SO mean to families with kids, too. I understand kids misbehaving, but I have no patience for parents who are not capable of getting their children buckled in-- it's for everyone's safety and it's non-negotiable, even if the kid screams about it. (Yes, I had a similar experience once, but luckily the kid fell asleep not long after take off-- screaming must have tired her out!)

This reminds me of when we paid $50/seat extra to be seated in the 'extended legroom' section on a long flight, only to be seated directly next to the bathrooms bulkhead, and in front of a woman traveling alone with an infant and a (very excited) toddler.

I feel like you'd still hear the kids, especially if you're toward the back of that section. I like the idea (been seated near some REALLY obnoxious kids before), but it wouldn't really work in practice IMO!

I appreciate the effort, but doubt a screaming babe can really be blocked out unless it's a huge plane. I would have been offended as a kid by this rule b/c when I was 11, I was soooo grown-up, thank you for very much.

I can see this like a movie: someone pays extra for a seat in the kid free zone, and then gets seated to a snoring, messy, space hogging adult.

I think it's a great idea! Just like you, even if I'm traveling with a child, it's nice to know that the people who *really* dislike kids will be further away.

And from the adult-without-kids perspective--yes! I've had the kid-kicking-my-seat-an-entire-flight-with-no-parent-supervision experience, and my brother just flew from Paris to NYC last week and sat in the same row (the dreaded row of 5) as a family with two kids who were letting the kids literally run up and down the aisles, screaming.

The family had so many complaints against them from nearby passengers, but it was a full flight, so they couldn't be moved and the parents refused to do anything (or were so not-in-control that they couldn't do anything) and in the end, the flight attendants had to come over and reprimand them so many times---and they got yelled at for not getting the kids to sit down in their seat belts for landing, and the pilot refused to land if the kids weren't sitting with their belts on. It was a mess.

I wouldn't pay more to be far from the kids, but I think this changes things because now it almost guarantees you'll be surrounded by kids instead of it being luck of the draw. Ultimately though if I'm flying economy, a screaming/kicking kid is not going to make my experience worse because it's already so uncomfortable.

I think it's a good idea. If I'm flying with a baby I'd feel more comfortable knowing that the people who are really bothered by babies are sitting somewhere else. I wouldn't pay extra to sit there though. I don't mind sitting near kids when I fly.

Just saw this article on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/04/travel/kid-free-airplane-zones/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

Child free zones in coach on an Asian airline. You pay extra for the seats they way you do for the extra leg room seats, and they are separated by the toilets from the regular rows.

I think it's a good idea. Flying without a kid, I'd prefer to be farther from them, but honestly probably wouldn't pay up. I imagine when I am flying with a baby, I'd rather the people that really, really don't want to be around a baby be far away from me so I can avoid the dirty looks. What do you think?
