@oskarsmommy: so it was actually my younger daughter that had the tick and potential Lyme exposure, although we all live in an area with lots of ticks with Lyme in general. But I did start taking food dyes and artificial flavors and preservatives out of her diet- I know I haven’t been perfect with every possible additive but I think I’m getting the major offenders. Maybe it’s helping, but maybe not, hard to know.

@runnerd: she hasn’t been formally evaluated. The spec ed services coordinator and the school psychologist observed her in her classroom (at a private preK) and made recommendations for her to me and the teacher, but didn’t see anything that would lead to a formal eval. At this point I think the only thing they would formally evaluate for is adhd- which I still think is possible but not overly likely. But she is already on their radar for when she starts K at the public school in the fall- with 21 kids in her class vs the 10 this year...

Has she been evaluated through the school for any special services?

Are son was when he started pre-k and we thought he might qualify for some extra assistance in the state sponsored pre-k offered here. But it turned (and we were incredibly concerned and worried) that they wanted him to go to the special education pre-k which offered class size of 8-10 vs 20. He has speech and behavioral delays. He’s a sweet kid and just a delight in so many ways, but a lot of things were happening that meant the general education pre-k wasn’t working. I cried so much the month he was in that class. When he moved to the smaller class with more attention available to teach him self soothing skills and give him the help he needed to manage his emotions, he just blossomed! He still is growing, but he started sharing about school, loving going (he had cried at almost every daycare and PreK drop for 4 years before).

I am so happy they have decided to keep him out of general education kindergarten as well meaning a class size of 15 vs. 25. He will be in a similar class as pre-k, but go to all the extra classes with general population (music, recess, special programs).

so I am probably the odd duck here- but I really buy into biomediacal, especially when it comes to our kids.. if you think of it, why should children have such a hard time emotionally and psychologically? I truly believe that most all roads lead to some sort of physiological disfunction (vitamin deficiencies, food 'allergies', infections, yeast, etc). I know you posted abut lyme concerns a while back - if it is an option could you also take her to a Lyme Literate ND? Even if she doesn't have lyme (which is unlikely for sure!) I feel LLMD/LLND's tend to be very knowledgeable in this aspect. I would NOT do this in place of behavioral therapy, but alongside, if ti is an option. Good luck!

@caitcat: thanks- i talked to them this afternoon and they will start looking for a match or a few options for us.

@macintosh: I’m sure even if your mom is totally qualified, it doesn’t make it easier to hear it about your own kid. The school psychologist who had observed my daughter in her class had suggested flower breathing (just deep breaths basically). The 5 year old almost never thinks of it, but my 3 year old sometimes asks me to do them with her when she’s really worked up. It shows that it works for some kids! And that I’m doing something right. Butmy big girl needs more.

@Foodnerd81: The referral service you mentioned sounds like a useful starting point - I hope it is, as you investigate it more! When we started looking into support options, that's the kind of thing I wish I'd come across, mainly because I really didn't know what kinds of options were out there.

@Foodnerd81: Kudos to you for being proactive. I'm sure it's a hard step to take. My mom is a psychologist and does play therapy as other ppl have mentioned. She works with a lot of young kids and she also coaches the parents on how to deal with certain behaviors. I may not agree with all her opinions on my child, but that's another story

I work for a social services agency and we offer services in the local schools. My son goes to our agency daycare/preschool and they provide individual support as well as work with the students on social/emotional topics in small groups. They actually taught him to take a deep breath when he's upset and he does it all on his own sometimes. It's something I wouldn't have thought of at his age (4), but it helps!

Thanks for these responses. It helps to feel less like a freak who needs a therapist for my 5 year old.

@Mrs. Yoyo: so actually the school psychologist and our pediatrician both recommended this service- it’s skmething the town pays into as a community service to match people up with mental health care. I wish I had know about it for my PPD actually.

@DillonLion: that must have been really upsetting at the time- my daughter made a similar threat (to kill someone else, during a verbal fight) which was extremely upsetting, but she’s never done anything like that before or since and I think she was going for a reaction. Nothing like getting that note from school the first week. @caitcat: I’m a little worried it will take us a long time to find a good fit and I’ll get super discouraged. But I just feel like I’ve done as much as I can alone. And I definitely need some help myself managing it all.

Again, thank you all who responded. It really helps.

My daughter is a little younger (she's 4.5). But for her age when we started looking into this last year, our pediatrician recommended we work with a play therapist as a starting point and then explore other options as needed. We ended up seeing an LCSW through a family therapy and counseling practice. She met with me one-on-one a few times, which was very helpful for support and problem-solving, but the bulk of the time she works just with my daughter. It seems to be helping. We still have times where we backslide, but I'm seeing more progress than not in the big picture. I felt at the end of my rope before we got started, and I feel like our family is in a much better place at this stage. I'm not sure I could pinpoint any one thing that has made a difference, but I'm grateful we sought some outside help and would do it again in a heartbeat.

We also recently started working with an OT for some sensory issues that our therapist thought are underlying with some of the behavior and emotional issues we've been seeing. When I thought of sensory issues beforehand, I didn't really think it fit my daughter - but I was surprised by some of the strategies they've been working on to help with some vestibular and proprioception issues. There are things that I'd always noticed (and if I'm being honest, thought were a little quirky!) in my daughter, that our OT has connected in a bigger picture and has great strategies to support her.

Good luck! As we started looking into options for some help, I realized there were many more avenues than I'd expected for getting some help and it took some time to find the right fit.

Based on your description of your daughter, an ABA therapist (applied behavior analysis) might be helpful. They can work directly with your daughter and then do parent training with you to help put a structure in place to manage her behavior. Some clinics have multiple therapists who work together. So the ABA therapist could work in conjunction with an OT to address any sensory needs, too.

Our ped referred us for psychological evaluation after she was making suicidal threats at age 4. The evaluation didn't turn up anything except a potential propensity for depression later in life. They recommended play therapy. We saw a play therapist which LO absolutely LOVED and I feel like it definitely helped. It seems like the threats were more "I want to see how people react to this statement" vs. "I genuinely want to hurt myself".

It was right before kindergarten that the play therapist wanted to finish treatment and I remember being worried that the big transition to kindergarten would be difficult without her support. It has been fine and LO has thrived this year in kindergarten.

Happy to answer any additional questions if you have them!

Your ped probably has a list of psychiatrists/psychologists/therapists that they can recommend. It's also worth checking with school. Our school referred us to the neuropsychologist we used to get a full eval .

I have no experience as a parent but I’m familiar with community organizations as a teacher and also several children close to me have benefitted from working with a therapist. I’m not sure what’s available in your area (probably more than in mine!) but these kids had/have a therapist who comes to the home and that has been extra helpful. I’m happy to answer questions or anything! You’re doing an awesome job, mama.

I’m pretty much at the end of my rope with my 5.5 year old. I’ve written about her on here plenty before, but I just feel like I’m maxed out on how to help her. Every time i think things are getting better, she has a huge backslide. I have the number for a referral service that will try to match you up with the right person for you/ your family, so I’m going to call when I have some uninterrupted time during the day. She starts kindergarten in the fall and I know from experience a big change like that is going to set off a disaster so I am now hoping we can have someone to help guide us through it.

Anyway, if your LO has seen a therapist or psychologist or similar, and you wouldn’t mind sharing, could you tell me what the process was like? What kind of professional did you see? How did it help? Feel free to Wall me if you would rather it be slightly more private. Thanks.
