@DesertDreams88: this sounds like an amazing situation for 7 weeks. We had a friend like this and who watched my son for 18 months. It was the best thing ever. He did get hauled a lot of places but he was also part of the family. I think you should go for it.

As for the vaccines, if her kids are vaxxed and baby is vaxxed I wouldn't worry. The first shot gives a really good immunity.

I wouldn't care if she had the booster or not, but would want her kids to be vaccinated (which they are so yay!) id rather my little not be in daycare at that young of an age, where they're exposed to way more germS. Having someone you know and trust watch your baby is way better (in my opinion) and worth giving up control of rigid schedules and requests.

@DesertDreams88: it seems great to have a friend who can be that open about her feelings & expectations. I know you've had some worries about this set-up for little G, but I think it's going to be great!

@JoyfulKiwi: I just got off the phone with her. She just really wants to help me and allow me space to share my concerns and desires, but like she said, she can't rearrange her life to accommodate my every wish. Like, she has to do kindergarten dropoff and pick up every day, regardless of naps and feeding times. She has 3 weekly appointments for her kids, and my baby is going to go along to those trips (OT, vision, playgroup). Basically, she's not going to be a nanny for me, she's going to be a friend who babysits and takes care of him like one of her own. I'm not looking for a nanny nor paying the level that would merit nanny care, anyway.

She was also concerned that as a first time mom, I might have a lot of requests and she would do the best she could to meet our needs but she worries she won't be able to do it 100% my way. I agree and understand, but ultimately, if having it 100% my way was my priority, I'd leave my job and stay at home. But that's not a real option for me, so I understand I have to be flexible with some things... just like I would have to be with daycare.

I would be totally fine with her not having the booster (but not un-vaccinated kids). Also, daycare workers aren't always required to have all vaccines up-to-date & there's more exposure in daycare via other kids. I would be curious what she means about not being able to provide the "level of care" and want to talk about that to make sure everyone was on the same page.

So it turns out that she probably got the booster 8 years ago with her first pregnancy, but she doesn't think she got it with her second pregnancy, she's waiting back to hear from her OB. She's not sure she could get the booster within the next two weeks before caring for him, based on her schedule. Her kids are fully vaxxed except for Chickenpox, which they haven't had. She also says there's a lot of hand-washing in their home, when they get home from school and before meals.

@petitenoisette: yeah I see what you mean. I asked the daycares about that and the cheaper day care would charge me for the summer, the more expensive one wouldn't, so it's basically a break-even thing. Regardless, my in-laws will be providing care starting in August when I have to go back next school year, so it's a moot point. Thanks for the idea though!

Unless there is an outbreak of pertussis in your area, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I would want to find out if her kids are vaccinated though.

As far as sticking with her, it sounds like maybe you would be more comfortable with a daycare setting. I do think baby will be exposed to more germs that way, run of the mill colds and such. But you might have more control which might make you feel better.

I did not ask anyone to get the dtap besides DH. No one else spent that much time with either baby.

I know it's a short term thing, but I think what's most concerning is that she obviously already is thinking it's not going to work out. That would make me feel really uncomfortable, I would not want to go into something feeling like it might fall through and leave you scrambling.

The vaccine thing is almost a secondary issue but I think you are right to assume by her reaction that her kids are prob not vaccinated. And that's obviously a dealbreaker too.

FYI, I know that at my daughter's current daycare and at another I toured that they'll let me withdraw her for the summer. For current daycare I just have to pay half of September's tuition to hold her spot. So might be worth investigating if you haven't already.

I would go with her still if her kids are fully vaxxed. But I would still be a little uneasy. For reference, LO and I both got Pertussis within 2 years of having the shot for me and even less for him. It really is not as strong as some vaccines...which is why herd immunity is so important...I'm the one who was exposed at school..I'm a HS teacher.

I would be concerned if her kids weren't vaccinated but not so much if she wouldn't get her booster. To speak to the daycare workers being vaccinated, I worked in a daycare for over 8 years and was never questioned about my own vaccinations or required to get any. My employee offered to pay our copay for the flu shot but it was never required.

Honestly I think there could be more risk of exposure at daycare- I'd be asking about the policy for workers and other kids and not make any assumptions if you are thinking about changing your plan. FYI-The daycare I take T to does not require vaccines.

Ultimately you are the Mom and it's your call- you could chat with your pediatrician about it too.

I don't know what I would do. All of my family (including our nanny) are vaccinated. We did offer to pay for it if anyone ran across cost issues.

A few additional thoughts:

1. Daycare providers are not required to have the tDap booster per my research. It is recommended, but not required. You have no idea if they are up to date.

2. Also, you have no idea whether the kids at daycare are all vaccinated or not. Just because a daycare requires a blue form does not mean the children are all vaccinated. For all you know one of the kids could have a blue form exemption (medical, religious), who knows.

I mandated that our immediate family was vaccinated for it. I never used a home provider, so I don't know what the protocol is for that, but as a daycare provider, you are required to be up-to-date on your vaccinations. Personally, with a baby that young, I would be VERY uncomfortable with my child spending a lot of time with someone who was not vaccinated because it is such a serious disease.

So I need to go back to work in 3 weeks and LO will be 2.5mo old. I only need childcare for the 7 weeks until summer break, so a SAHM friend offered to watch him. We were really happy about this plan for a couple reasons: friendship, more personal, use cloth diapers, not having to cancel/withdraw from daycare after the 7 weeks, half the price of daycare (!) etc. But there are logistical complications - we have to give her some baby gear, and pick up is at a different time & place almost every day.

However, I just realized last night that the current TDAP vaccine booster recommendation is to get it every 5 years or so, since it's less effective than previously thought. DH & grandparents got it, but I forgot to ask my friend, so I texted her about it last night asking her to check with her doctor. She has two kids, ages 5 and 7, so I figured/hoped it wouldn't be an issue.

She texted back this morning a long, supportive, kind text but said, "I understand your concern and I'll look into it, but I can't commit to a shot at this time. I'd rather talk with you about it on the phone. However, the bigger picture is, this has concerned me that I might not be able to provide the level of care you desire."

Uh oh. So there's a good chance it seems that she won't get the booster (even if she's out of date), and it raises the possibility that her kids aren't vaccinated. I know, I guess I should have asked earlier, I didn't realize. If her kids aren't vaxxed, that makes my decision clear, I'll do daycare. But what if her kids are fully up to date but she's not? Is this a deal breaker, for the 7 weeks? I know which way I'm leaning, but I'm an anxious overworrier so I have a hard time assessing true risk.

The alternative is daycare, which has fully vaxxed infants but who knows about the daycare workers. I don't think they're required to be up to date, either. So it might be equal risk. For double the cost, but less logistical issues.
