Our treadmill folds up and then we hide the key needed to start it in my husband's sock drawer (top drawer of our dresser, so DD can't reach it). Does your treadmill desk fold up? What about using a baby gate? One like this might work:

Hmmm...good question. What does your treadmill look like? Ours has one thick, short cord that goes to the wall to plug it in. It also has a safety hook that you hook to your shirt. That has a cord on it. I think we will probably remove that (if possible) when we need to be child-proofing. Is there a child lock on it or can you keep it unplugged when you're not using it? I would suggest that - unplug when it's not being used and tuck the cord under the treadmill. That way, Charlie can't get it turned on if he wanted to.

With my parents' treadmill, we unplugged it. That way there were no lights or anything attractive like that. There weren't any other cords dangling, so they weren't a problem.

I took the plunge and bought a treadmill desk today! I'm very excited... I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer, so this will be a huge lifestyle change for me. I'm looking forward to becoming much healthier over the next few months.

My only concern is making sure that it won't endanger our kids. A treadmill is guaranteed to attract Charlie's interest, with all those lights and moving parts. Plus, Mike Tyson's four-year-old daughter died in a tragic treadmill accident involving a cord:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jGNV3mE8Iph_ePbtreCubEAo0LTg

I will have to make sure that no cords are dangling from the treadmill, and that it's not easy to turn the machine on! I don't have a secure room where I can keep the treadmill away from the kids, so I have to make the unit itself safe. If I can't ensure that it's safe, then I'll have to return the entire unit alas.

Anyone out there have a treadmill? How did you childproof the treadmill so that cords and other safety issues didn't become an issue?
