@creativemomma15: somehow my one year old can open those occasionally! But we just had them under the kitchen sink (trash bags, sponges, used to have dishwasher detergent but no longer) and on the cabinets where the pots and pans are because he just loved emptying that a little too much!

Now we just moved all the dangerous stuff up high. Technically my four year old could climb up though but she isn't really left unsupervised theee for long (pantry) and I don't think my one year old can climb up there yet.

We keep medicines up high where they can't be reached by the kids.

Honestly, we moved two months ago and haven't child proofed anything. I have three kids and none of them really touch anything they shouldn't. They quickly learned what was off limits.

We installed a mechanism that catches the door and prevents it from opening more than 2 inches. We have something similar for cabinet drawers. Based on the effort I have to exert to bypass this I don't think a 4 yo would be able to open them.

ETA: from the outside you cannot tell the cabinets are baby proofed.

@Corduroy: could you put things like band aids that she can have independent access to in a place she can easily get to, so that there is no motivation to be anywhere neat the meds? Maybe her own little Tupperware first aid kit?

You could get a tackle box or large toolbox and slap a combo lock on it. That way the really dangerous stuff is really secure and you could get away with a less intense cabinet lock

@Mrs. Lion: My daughter thinks she can't get past knob covers but a few times she's removed them and still told me she can't get through the (now uncovered) door. So weird.

I think she is or almost is old enough/responsible enough to understand not to mess with medicine but I'm concerned she'd open the cabinet for something like bandaids and forget to close it giving my 2yo access. Still he'd have to climb the shelves and open a bottle.

@creativemomma15: I'll try this one next since it doesn't require an install. If not I'll try a magnet.

I've also got to install something higher up on our doors to keep DD from letting her brother outside.

We have medicine and cleaning supplies on high shelves that they can't reach anyway. Like medicine is in a top shelf in the linen closet and kitchen cabinet, cleaners are in cabinet above washing machine. The linen closet I suppose she could climb the shelves like a ladder if she was really determined but I think I would hear that racket before she got to it.

I think by 4 your kiddo should be old enough to start to understand that medicine is for grown ups to handle. We keep all of ours in a high cabinet in the kitchen or in our master linen closet which they don't typically have access to. I think when we get licensed to foster we will probably have to put it in a box that is locked with a key, but that seems like overkill to me. As for childproofing that a 4 year old can't do, the only thing my 4 year old hasn't figured out yet are knob covers.

Can your child open this kind of lock too?!? You have to push the green part and gray at the bottom at the same time. It's pretty tight but maybe it's easier for little fingers.

You could do magnetic locks and just keep the "key" somewhere safe.

When my friend was becoming a foster parent, they had to install actual keyed locks on their cleaning supply closet and medicine cabinet.

Our babysitter pointed out to us this weekend that our 4yo can open our "babyproofed" hall cabinet that contains medicine. LO went in the cabinet to get a bandaid (and fortunately not to eat medicine). Most is in childproof containers but some like Tums and random supplements are not. DH and I were surprised and disturbed by this so the next day we bought a few different locks and she can undo them all easily. Crap. Any suggestions for locks I can open but a 4yo can't? We have smallish side by side knobs on those cabinets and under the sink.

At what age do you stop proofing and let them be? Not that I think we're there, especially with LO2 at age 2.
