Maybe this up high? I prefer this over chains; these are super easy to just flip close

@Littlebit7: the front door is directly outside her bedroom door so I don't actually want it to make noise, since Dh or I come in and out while she is sleeping. Unless it chimed in my room.

@Ree723: no lock with inside key. But we should be able to install a high dead bolt. She currently can't do the top lock that we have but will be able to soon enough.

We have a chain lock up top but my husband forgets sometimes and DS has walked out the front door twice this last month!!! We grabbed him right away but I'm so stressed about our door all the time - I'm constantly checking it. Now I try to just keep our stroller with the brake on in front of the door (it lives next to it anyway) and that way DS can't reach the knob.

Do you have a lock on the inside of your door you can lock with a key? That's what we have - our door locks automatically from the outside when shut, but inside you can still open it unless you put the key in the lock and turn it.

Our not yet 2 year old can open the front door so we are super vigilant about keeping the key in the lock and turning it. She can't turn the key yet so it works for now, but our plan is to install a deadbolt high up before too long. Our entry hall is also easily shut off - one door goes to the lounge, one at the end of the hall goes to the kitchen, and then the staircase to upstairs. We keep the lounge door closed, and the kitchen can be accessed from the lounge (not just the entry hallway), so we keep that bit gated off, and then DD has run of the ground floor except for the kitchen area and entry hall, but we don't need to worry about her getting out the door. We also have a gate at the top of the stairs for a similar reason.

It is so scary to think about them getting out, I seriously have nightmares about it sometimes!

@Foodnerd81: you can buy a door chime. It's like a mini part of a security system. I think they sell it on amazon. Basically chimes when the magnets aren't aligned

http://www.amazon.com/EZ-TONE-Magnetic-Chime/dp/B00I38UG4Q

Something like this? It was a quick Google search on Amazon so there mig be something else out there.

A lock and chain up high! We always keep it locked as well as the regular door lock. Can't rely on an alarm system or directions with a little kid!

@T.H.O.U.: I guess I picture someone fumbling with it in the middle of the night in a panic? Like, if someone was staying with her who wasn't used to it? (And the number of times someone else has stayed with her is once, soon to be twice. So obviously this is not exactly a reasonable concern...)

Just curious, why would a door knob handle be considered a fire hazard? I just dont see how its much different than an apartment that has like a deadbolt and a chain. Just one more thing to unlock.

We have a dead bolt high up.

There was a really sad story here last winter of a three year old that opened his grandparents front door while visiting and wandered into the neighborhood. He didn't make it. :crying:

I've been hyper vigilant about it since.

@Truth Bombs: no alarm system.
I should add she has only opened it twice so far and they were both times when we were getting ready to go out so she wasn't the front door and I was just in the kitchen grabbing snacks or something, and I heard her delighted "I did it!" the first time. She hasn't actually left though I have talked to her about he important it is not to play with that door.

I'm thinking once she is in the big bed we will just do a chain lock up high and continue to be very careful to lock the baby gate when she is going to be unattended for a while. And like I said, luckily the worst case is she got locked in the hallway by closing the door behind her. We only have four units on our floor and they all know where she lives. Clearly not GOOD but could be much worse.

We have a deadbolt but it's low and LO figured that out in a jiffy. Do you have an alarm system? We set our alarm to chime whenever an exterior door is open, so I rely on that to let me know if she's trying to escape. But mostly we just had a lot of firm discussions that you never leave the house without an adult and she seems to get it.

Luckily, our door handle is really high up, so it's not easy to access for smaller children. I use the deadbolt though when I want to be extra sure.

I was thinking about this the other day. DS just learned how to open doors but has known how to lock/unlock the front door for a while. I'm thinking we just always keep our alarm set so that we know if he opens the door.

I know someone and they changed their deadbolt to be a key on the inside as well. Then they just hung the key up high by the front door.

I worry about this because we live on a busy-for-our-neighborhood street and our door opens directly onto the front yard. We do have a deadbolt and are really careful to always use it. But when we were visiting my parents, DD figured out how to open their door, which doesn't have a deadbolt. They live in a rural area so it's less danger from traffic but I was nervous because she could get lost and it was really cold out. And now I know she can and will open doors so it doesn't put my mind at ease... We are installing an alarm system for unrelated reasons, but I'm really glad it includes a door chime because then at least there's some sort of alert if she manages to get our door open.

Do you have any child proofing devices on your front door?

My 2 year old just figured it how to open the door to our condo. Luckily it only leads to a hall way that has heavy doors to the stairs that lead out of the building, but obviously we don't want her wandering the hall. We could put a doorknob cover on but that seems like a fire hazard. She is still in a crib now and hasn't tried to escape, and there is a baby gate I can use when I'm leaving her unattended (like if I'm taking a shower), so for now I'm not worried, more just curious how others have handled it. We don't have a dead bolt at this point but could install one I guess.
