Ah, I was finally able to see the video. Yeah, in that case I would leave my full cart and just leave the store. I don't want my kid(s) thinking they can act like that in public or ever for that matter. To me, though, there's a difference between a kid throwing a fit because they don't get their way and them having more of a meltdown just because they aren't feeling great or they are getting tired because it's close to nap time. There are also the kids that act out because of certain disorders and such.

I think that's why people need to be careful not to stare and judge, you aren't in the other person's shoes so you don't know what is going on. Everyone has a bad day, so I think it's important to remember to have a little empathy for others.

This thread reminds me of the Modern Family episode where Cam and Mitch accidentally lock Lily in the car... and Cam starts freaking out and says he needs help right away because other people are looking at him and judging him as a parent.... definitely one of my favorite tv scenes ever!!

I have been a victim of a grocery store melt down. It wasn't that bad though! haha!

The last one, a lady actually came up to me and said "I feel like that some days". Its nice to know that others aren't judging you or your parenting skills when those things happen.

I always feel sorry for parents when their kids are having a melt down. Its so hard and some days, those things happen, and "you feel like that" too.

I'm one of those people giving judgement looks... if you can't expect your kid to behave, then they shouldn't be out in public.

I can honestly say no one in my family would ever dare throwing a fit in a public place (not I, nor either of my younger brothers, and we never have) because one of our parents would just pick us up, put whatever they had down and march us out of the store. There is no reason for a child to ever behave like that in public, ever.

I realize not all parents have the same idea but Cameron will never be allowed to do that, and he will be taught that if it ever comes down to it. At that age, they should better.

If you've got a baby in a car seat/stroller and they're really young and start crying, I think that's very different... they're crying because they have needs, not because they want something they can't have.

My son isn't old enough, but even the looks I get when he occasionally cries at the store...people look at you like the worst parent ever. I don't feel guilty, though, because babies cry sometimes so I just give a look right back!

You are right, though, kids are the best birth control! Having one really makes me consider stopping at one.

My son is 3 and my poor nanny just got this experience for the first time the other day. The three of us were at Whole Foods and Liam started melting down. The look on my nanny's face was priceless, she started hunkering down to his level to start reasoning with him so I had to swoop down, grab him and tell her to come with me right away. We don't subject poor behavior onto innocent bystanders haha. To let your child scream and tantrum at the detriment of other shoppers is rude and selfish. Ignoring a child that is emotional is also cold imo. I remove him from people that didn't choose to have a child in their life and go let him calm down outside with me or in the car. I think the comfort and ear functions of others should outweigh my need for a loaf of bread. We can go back in once he calms down.

I remember that commercial, I don't know if it aired here, or if I saw it somewhere else.

I have to admit to being guilty of giving looks- sometimes dirty- when I see a child misbehaving. Usually though it's not because of the child's behaviour, but the parents reaction. That guy in the commercial did the right thing letting him scream it out. It bugs me when I see parents dragging their kids screaming out of the store, and when they scream back. It also ticks me off when they bribe them, or coddle them, last week on the bus, I heard a woman constantly apologizing to her daughter!

LOL! I have seen that one bofore but never gets old. Haha!
I agree with RED- you always think yours will be different. I know I think that way. I know when I see anything like that (Never as extreme as the commercial though) I always think "Oh Heck NO!" With our 8 year old we dont allow it. Heck last weekend she was throwing a tiff over something and pouting and being rude when we were out with a bunch of family for brunch. So we took her out to the car to talk. MAN did we get some HORRIBLE looks. I mean she instantly was crying because she knew she was in trouble, and was fighting DH to not go to the car. Seriously we just go to the car and talk about it until she is ready to act like I big girl and go back in. But people looked at DH like he was going to beat her or something. "Judging eyes" like someone else said.

Haha, that was hilarious!!

It's only birth control for a while cause then you become delusional and start thinking, "But mine will be different." No major meltdowns yet but then again, she's got many years ahead to start. Not sure how I'll deal with them yet but it's definitely something that I won't tolerate.

@mrbee: My comment is more directed at your post title, "Children... the best birth control ever".

That made me chuckle because I have said that exact phrase to my husband many times. Especially because his family has 5 young kids under the age of 5, and when you put all 5 of them together, it is MASS.CHAOS. It used to totally freak me out (it still does, but a little bit less) hahaha. But seriously, the 4 of the kids are all pretty ill-mannered (1 is still a baby, so can't fault her) and so now my big priority is to raise well-mannered kids!

Link doesn't work...But LO has had crying fits in malls and once while I was waiting for my coffee at Starbucks and people were staring at me, eyeing me to get the eff out of there. I grabbed my coffee and made a run for it. I can't stand having all those eyes on me.

@mrbee: Boo:( Link seems broken, goes to a PS Move video......

But, yes, we've had public meltdowns. We try to minimize them as best we can, but sometimes, when all else fails, we just remove him from the situation. Not only for discipline reasons (to talk, calm him down, etc.) but also out of respect for the other patrons, wherever we may be. I sympathize with other parents when their child is having a meltdown, but no one wants to hear a screaming, wailing child for very long. Take the kid outside if nothing else is working! Sometimes, all they need is a change of scenery.

A man once told my mom that she needed to be able to control me when I was having a melt down in the grocery store. Surprisingly she didn't say anything rude back to him.

So far my LO just had a screaming fit in Michael's, and a mom with her son came by and gave me a dirty look. Thanks for the sympathy!

Would like to see this!

I honestly am not embarrassed when my daughter has public meltdowns. I don't know any of these people so I can't concern myself with judgments from complete strangers. It doesn't make me feel like a bad parent, etc. She can't control her own emotions and if it happens outside of the house sometimes...so be it!

I like the looks that the other parents at the grocery store give this guy when his kid is melting down:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yXthdWtU-A

So true. You can tell who the other parents are. They look like they just feel sorry for you. The non-parents get that judge-y look going... I am always amazed at how quickly that judge-y look can make me feel about two inches tall. I guess I am susceptible to guilt.

Have you ever been the victim of a grocery store meltdown?
