Granted, I don't think anyone should be able to own a wild animal, but you know what, even dogs that have been docile their entire lives have been known to bite out of the blue. I feel like the state should have at least done an investigation. FWIW, I live in CT, not in the town, but close and the thought of a chimp running in the streets absolutely terrifies me. I am seriously trying to think about it from the perspective of having the owner as a next door neighbor...would would I do? However my initial opinion is the state should not be responsible here. I'm not sure we should be holding the government responsible for the actions of private people, even if those people were breaking the law. And if I remember the story correctly (which I might be wrong?) this lady who got mauled was a friend of the owner. So she had to know about the propensities of the chimp. People do dumb things all the time and (I consider owning wild animals one of them) but it's not fair to burden every taxpayer for this issue. She got close to the chimp as a favor for a friend. I do feel bad for her though. She should set up a National donation drive instead. Coming at it from that angle would be better and the help she needs can be spread out across the country. After seeing her pictures, I don't mind donating but think it's wrong of her to sue the state. I would be suing the state, too. I remember reading that this chimp stopped traffic and chased police officers years before he ripped this woman's face off. They even passed a law saying people couldn't own chimps and other exotic animals in the state. Had the state enforced this law this attack wouldn't have happened. I don't see how the state should be responsible for her medical expenses. The attack occurred on private property and the victim voluntarily got very close to a wild animal. After all the chimp belonged to her friend. I would need several lifetimes or the Power ball to pay back her medical bills. Honestly? I don't blame her for wanting to sue the state. The actual owner of the chimp at the time of the attack has since passed away so what other course of action does she have? I'm guessing anyone in her situation would at least want their medical expenses covered.
