We have been discussing ours a lot and have mostly put it off because we very much struggle with who we would choose. We are setting up a meeting with someone to discuss further. We are told he costs 1k to take care of anything, but if we want to make any changes in the future it will be at no cost to us. We also have a quote from a paralegal a friend mentioned and his price is $500. We do have assets, so that may drive up the price.

We chose my sister and BIL. We had to choose a secondary person, so we chose my parents (my mom is only 49 currently, so she could handle it). There is no way in heck I would choose my DH's family, and he agreed. We had a lawyer do it, but she happens to be a family friend so she did it for free.

We chose my brother and SIL. We asked them on the beach while we were in family vaca. I was still pregnant and my brother's response was "can I wait to meet the kid and make sure she's cool?". He was obviously kidding and they were thrilled to be asked. Hubs and I don't want to leave her with either set of parents since they are aging. My bro and SIL will raise her as we would and are well off enough that she wouldn't be a burden (although our assets and life insurance should provide for her anyway).

We are paying our lawyer $1,000 for a comprehensive estate plan (wills, living wills, power of attorney, medical proxy, and establishing a trust for our LO in the event of our passing). If you just want a really simple will naming guardians I bet you could do it on legal zoom!

DH brought this up this weekend... we don't have a will (we have NO assets) but now that we have a son we need to think seriously about choosing a legal guardian in the unfortunate event something happens to us.

How did you guys go about this? How much is it to hire a lawyer to do the will? Did you have a formal dinner with the people you asked to be guardians, or was it more nonchalant? I have a couple family members in mind but I want to ask them politely and provide an "exit" if it's not something they're up to.
