I have 2 boys and 3 brothers. DH has one sister. For DS1, we went with his sister and my youngest brother as he and I have always been close. For DS2, I wasn't really sure how to handle this but my youngest brother had a baby 2 months before I did so we sort of split the other brothers.

What does the role of godparent mean to you? It can mean such different things for different families:
- A person who is responsible for the upbringing of a child if the parents become unable.
- Provide spiritual mentorship throughout the child's life.
- Be a special adult in the child's life.
- An honorary position that honors the relationship between the godparent and the parents.

I would just talk to my husband about the practical expectations we have for the Godparent. Is one sister more religious than the other? Do you expect one sister to have more time/resources/interest in being a godparent?

If one of your sisters doesn't become the more preferred choice, I would either flip a coin or look outside my family to a close friend.

@Foodnerd81: I was baptized in the Catholic Church and have two godmothers, one godfather. It may have changed since 88 though?

I feel exactly the same way as @erinbaderin: . Our church doesn't have God parents and my in laws tried to pressure me into naming my husband's sister as the God mother anyway to make her feel special. Um, no. She is the baby's aunt, that should be special enough.

@erinbaderin: that's exactly why Dh chose his friend instead of his brother as a godfather.

We chose Godparents who were friends, not siblings, to honour our special relationship with them and the relationship we hope they'll have with our kids. My feeling is that our siblings already have a special relationship (they're the aunts/uncles) and so this is a way we can bring other people into our "family".

@catomd00: not in the Catholic Church, I don't think. You can have just one godparent by they won't do two godmothers (I don't think). Then again the church we do it at is pretty loose with the rules.

You can have more than one. My god daughter has two god fathers (her uncles).

@MOMTOLITTLEB: yeah I lean towards my single sister because I think it might mean more to her, where my other sister will likely have her own kids soon. But I'm sure the same single sister will be godmother to the other sisters first too.

Eta: and DH only has two brothers, no sisters, but he chose a friend as Cs godfather.

I have two sisters and my husband has one. So we chose the one we thought it would mean the most to. That was his sister. If we have a second child, I think the godparents will be my sister and her husband. i don't think any feelings were hurt, my one sister has her own children and then my other sister barely acknowledges my son two years later so glad I didn't choose her.

If you have more siblings that you are close to than the number of children you plan to have, how did you choose godparents for your LOs?

With our first it was easy- I have three sisters but my older sister and I have always been closest, and she is C's godmother, and my two younger sisters are closer to each other. That's how we split up maid of honor and bridesmaid roles too. But we are having our second and almost definitely last baby and I have two more sisters. Neither will be mad, exactly, but I don't really know how to pick one over the other. One is married and will probably have kids in the next ear or so. One is single but hoping to meet the right guy and get married one day. Both live kind of far.

I let Dh choose the godfather.

How did you choose?
