@PinkElephant: Well, the tasks were chosen so that he could be successful at them. They were related to him getting ready for school in the morning and getting ready for bed at night. Basically, we were doing them already, but the issue was that he was waiting for me to prompt him to get his backpack ready, for example, rather than getting it ready himself. So there was that bit of familiarity and the fact that he needed it for the day.

We had tried the chart before, but he would never care enough to complete it. Single stickers don't motivate him, so we only use the chart for large things. The next one will be a replacement for a remote control boat. It will be completing certain tasks, again, ones that he already does and is familiar with, but it has to be consistent without reminding...I suppose that's the actual skill I am rewarding...does that make sense?

@looch: Thanks! This helps.

I'm not sure how strict of an approach I want to take, since the little one is three - on one hand I like it; on the other, I can see all hell breaking loose if there's not a chance for one of the girls to "come back" from a mistake. Maybe this is where we aim to be by the end of the summer.

@PinkElephant: We had 6 tasks, three to do in the morning before school and three after school. If he didn't do that task, he was out of luck and couldn't make up for it, because the goal was to complete 6 tasks everyday for 5 week days.

@looch: Thanks! Were your boxes related to specific chores? Or did he just have to hit a certain number of chores completed? Like, if he didn't make his bed on Tuesday, could he make up for that by putting away his laundry on Friday, or is he just out of luck for the week?

Sorry if that doesn't make sense! And trampoline park is a great reward! :)

Ours was weekly, so if my son filled up all the boxes, he got a reward. One reward that went over really well was an hour at a trampoline park that weekend. We're in the go big or go home camp here in terms of completion and rewards.

If you've done a chore chart for your LO, when/how do they get a reward?

While we've got some extra time (ha! extra time, what's that?) this summer, I'd like to reinforce some of the basic "chores" I'd like my 3 and 5 year olds to do regularly. The reward aspect, I think, gets a little tricky - while some things can be done multiple times a day, some might only be "available" to complete once or twice a week. For example:

-Put shoes back on shoe rack
-Clear your own dishes from the table
-Put your folded laundry in your drawers
-Unload children's flatware/plates from dishwasher
-Clean up (specific) toys when asked to

I think it's waaaayy too complicated to assign a "value" to each task at this age, so I was thinking everything is worth 1 sticker, and when they fill...what? A row? A whole chart? they get a reward. So I'm curious what goal other kids have had to meet before earning their reward!

Thanks!
