@LadyDi: I get enough money for the whole year at a time because I rarely have cash either. That way it’s set aside and I don’t have to worry about it!

@LadyDi: Oh, we also keep her bank in the living room on a higher shelf. If she asks us to get it down we will and she can look at it/count the money but that way we make sure the money doesn't get all mixed together!

@LadyDi: when we started she got $2 but it was in quarters to make it easy to divide up. Now she gets $4. Like I said, we divide in 4 - three in each designated spot and she chooses the last one - so we are trying to keep the math simple for as long as possible :silly: she has this piggy bank and we love it!

@catgirl: Do you have a piggy bank(s) for your DD or how does she separate her allowance? I am going to take a similar approach with DS soon, he's 6 and hasn't received an allowance before. Also, if you don't mind me asking, how much do you give her? I was going to start him off at $3 just for the ease of putting a dollar each in spend/save/give. DH is really lukewarm about the idea of an allowance.

We don't do allowance but my 5 and 7 year olds fold and put away laundry, clear dishes, unload the dishwasher, and tidy up toys every week-dishes are daily. They also sweep and vacuum and help with cleaning the bathroom sometimes. We are working on dusting and making beds.

We need to get better about daily chores. My kids both love to help unload the dishwasher, help with trash and recycling, and will help put away their laundry with lots of guidance. They are less excited about cleaning up toys.

Ooof. My kids are 5 and 7 and they get no allowance and have no chores, although the two things are unrelated. We tried an allowance, with the “spend/save/donate” deal, but they got very upset at the idea of having money they weren’t allowed to spend, and then we kept forgetting to give it to them, and it all fell apart.

We're not too organized about it but my 8 and 5 year old do the following:

Daily
Clear table
Put dishes in dishwasher (if available)
Gather (and later put away) hat, jacket, mask, shoes, lunch, and backpack.
Charge laptops for school
Put laundry in hamper

As needed
Clean their messes (vacuum, wipe up, etc)
Change sheets and clothes from bet wetting
Fold laundry (but more often just out away)
Tidy rooms
Tidy the bathroom

We're in cleanup mode right now because grandparents are coming to visit for Spring Break.

DS is 5 and his chores are:
1. Make his bed
2. Feed cat
3. Laundry in hamper
4. Put away his laundry
5. Set the table
6. Clear his plate
7. Keep toys tidy

We don’t have a chore chart and he does not get allowance. We are flexible on the chores, sometimes I put his laundry away if I fold it after he goes to bed for example.

My daughter is almost 8 and we're terrible at this :bummed: Really the only set responsibility she has is to do her own laundry. I tell her to bring it downstairs, she loads it, puts it in the dryer once it's done and folds/puts it away. She does have to clean up after herself (put dishes in the sink after dinner) and make her bed, but I typically have to remind her. Toy cleanup is hit and miss because we typically just let things be as long as they're in her room and are out of the way in the living/family room. She will periodically make her own breakfast, help with dinner prep, and help unload the dishwasher but this is as time allows/as I ask. And because we have a cleaning service come every month, we don't really do much cleanup duty, though when we do our own cleaning, she's usually eager to help.

@caitcat: I printed a chore chart out last night and they were suuuper excited lol. I think the goal that it becomes automatic but at least it's fun for now.

Right now I did brush teeth, fold bed, feed animals, pick up toys, pick up clothes, brush teeth, and then DS has read for 10 minutes, and DD has dry pull-up in the morning.
I also have 3 for good behavior and 3 for bad behavior, so they both cleaned off the table to get a 'good' check.

It was super cute to hear them scrambling around cleaning to get their checks.

We did a chore chart last year, but it fell by the wayside at some point. It was a nice way to kick off new routines, but once the kids got in a good habit, I felt like we didn't need it as much and half the time I forgot to update it - oops! Here are the kids chores at this stage:

Six year old:

Daily - feed cat in the evenings, clean/refill his water bowl, set the table for dinner, clear away her plates from the table after meals, tidy up her bedroom and family room by the early evening (before dinner, basically)

Four year old:

Daily: clear her plate from the table after meals, clean up her bedroom/family room, take used cat food bowls to the sink (she wanted to help feed him, but wow was that messy...)

They both help on a weekly/as-needed basis with sorting/putting away their clean laundry, a more thorough clean up of the basement playroom, dusting/cleaning baseboards, and putting away silverware from the dishwasher.

@JennyPenny: @catgirl: Those are great lists and I agree that they should be done without a reward. I think for my son the chore chart will help just to be a reminder without my having to tell him to do it. And agreed on no screen time till it's done.

We need to be better about this! Our 3.5 and 6.5 year old are required to pick up their toys/messes and bring their plates in after eating, and the 6 year old also is responsible for collecting all the garbage around the house before we put it out every week. We should be adding more to her responsibilities!

My DD is 6 - she gets an allowance and she has chores but they are not tied to each other. I remember reading something at some point that said you give kids an allowance because it’s part of the family’s contribution to them and they have chores because it’s their contribution to the family. DH and I both agreed with the logic. So DD doesn’t earn her allowance by doing chores, she just gets it. Though we have rules with her allowance - 25% goes to spending, 25% to saving, 25% to giving, and she picks where to put the last 25%. We match her saving and giving money at the end of the year.

She has a set list of chores. We started with a set list around 3 (I think?) that has evolved as she has gotten older but we had her help clean up even before that. She has some that are done daily and some that are weekly. I will remind her about each task twice but if she doesn’t do them she loses tv or kindle time. We have set the expectation that we all have chores and responsibilities around the house because we all live here. I don’t think a reward is a reason to do them. For chores/tasks outside of her normal ones we will give her the option to earn money, but only for things that we are truly letting her choose if she wants to do them.

Her daily chores are:
Feeding the cat (twice a day)
Making her bed (not perfectly but at least pulling covers up)
Clothes in hamper each day
Picking up all toys downstairs before watching tv in the evening
Setting the table
Taking her dishes to the sink
Sweeping around the table
Basic bedroom tidying (floors have to be clear enough to walk around)

Weekly:
Dust
Empty bathroom trash cans (while I do the others)
Take recycling to the garage
Bring hamper to laundry room, help fold laundry and put away
Deeper clean of her bedroom

My oldest is 6 and we just start doing more official chores with him. His responsibilities are to set the table, clean his place after a meal (including putting his dishes in the dishwasher), put away his laundry, clean his room and help clean common areas. We don't do a chore chart but he is required to get his chores done before he can have screen time. I treat it pretty flexibly too. Usually at some point in the day I'll say something like "Today your chores are to clean your room and set the table. That needs to get done before screens." Depending on what's going on he doesn't always have to do those things, and sometimes I'll throw something extra and random in.

My almost 4 year old doesn't have any chores per se, but we are working on having help with the same sorts of tasks so he's ready to do them as chores when he's 6 too.

How old are your kids and what do they do for chores? Do you use a chore chart / do they get an allowance or rewards?

I'd like to create a chore chart for my 6 and 4 year olds so just interested in what others do.
DS's current chore is feeding our chickens and gathering eggs but he keeps skipping the feeding/watering them part and I'm struggling with getting him to see the importance in that!
DD's job is to feed our bunny.
I'd also like to get them cleaning their own rooms and helping inside more... TIA!
